I ought to know something about it, for I was in the | trade once,” and the old sea-dog laughed softly to himself. & *‘Would you like to hear about a trip I made onoe in an oplum smug- gler! It wasa narrow chance we had of it, you can bet your life on that.” Jack Eastby had long sinca retired from the sea, and his ohief enjoyment was to gather about him a circle of ‘admiring friends, into whose ears he was wont to pour the most astonishing tales that ever mortal listened to. He seldom wanted for an_sudience, snd wita the boys he was looked up to as ahero, a man who had seen all that ‘was worth seeing. Forty years ago I was ohief mate of the Azalene, sa taut and pretty an opium smuggler as ever run a cargo under the nose of a sléepy China offi- cial. She was commanded by Tom Pepper, po relation of the Tom who was kicked out of his quarters down below, you know. Tom was a thor- ough seamau, a man of nerve who did not know the meaning of the word fear, while for a Chinaman he enter- tained tho utmost contempt. The wind was fair, aud the Azalens under cloud of canvas rapldly nesred the land. Over the Ladrone Islands hung a dense cloud of sh fog that was gradaally -u-eu:img along the coast, rolling on long the surface of the water, and completely shutting out the land. The Chinese crew clu tered around the break of the top-gal- lant forecastle, discussing the chances of runniag the blockade, the grave, sedate Jowther zot being able to sub- due sll traces of excitement. We were well armed, carrying three heavy gunv, as well s a fall asort- ment of small srms of all kinds. Sail was reduced, look-outs doubled, and finally the breese died out, leaving us becalmed. I seized the opportunity to lower the light boat hoist- ed at the stern, having heard the uack of wild fowl coming out from the obsourity of the f-g. I wasa good shot in those days, and generally maa- aged to kesp tne cabin table well sup- plied with game. Returaing tothe vessel in the course of an hour well laden down with wild fowl, I found Oaptain Tom walk- ing thodeck in s fit of impatience. The fog was growing denser cach mo- ment; the huge topesi's hung idly from the yards, while the reef points koptup an {ncowssnt tattor, as the canvas, with spasmodio jerks, partial- ly filled with the lass efforts of the breeze, foll back as if exhausted by the effort. At oclock the capta'n went be- low, advising me to do the same, leav- ing Mr. Rush, the second officer, in charge of the deck until midnight, when I was to be called. The cold, damp fog bung over the ship with a peculiarly depressing in- fluence, and, leaving particular in- structions with Mr, Rush to call me in case there should be_the slightest change in the weather, Igladly availed myself of the opportunity to seek s little repose, and the warm, genfal cabin was in sharp contrast, I 'can tell you, to the wet, cheerless deck. Cap- tain Tom brewed a couple of stiff punchee, aud after a short pull at the pipe, turned in. Perhaps I should have reminded you that the boat I had used had been left towing astern. It was my_ intention to hoist it up when the breeze atruck In. ‘The swell from the northwest caused the clipper to roll gently as she rose and fell on the bosom of the ocesn. The flap of canvas aloft fell dreamily on the officer’s ear. Slowly the moon rose, lightening up the fog, which undulated and glis- tened like a huge wall of silver. An occaslonal light puff of air skimmed overthe water, whilo the gurgle of water along the Azalene’s counter an- nounced that the flost oraft was forg- ing slightly ahead. pidiy the mist cleared up; one by one the stars peeped forth, \P- breeze almost Impempfib:( freshomed; but still the tired orew slept on. Tbe sails gleamed. ghastly white in the struggling rays of the moow; the low, shapely hull loom- od up, bringing out in strong_relief the raking spars and standing rigging. Darting through the water at racing spood, two long, narrow boats, filled with men, suddenly darted from the obscurity, pulling directly for the Azaline. They were what werc known as mandarin boats, and their principle duty was to watoh for oplum smug- glers, with orders to show no marcy to the forelgn devils who dared to in- terfere with the emperor's edict. With a fierce yell, mingled with outs of triumpb, the Manchoos dashed slongside. With a simalta- neous shock the boats struck the ves- sel, and the mcn awarmed aboard. Rush, half aroused and confused by the tumult and nofse, ran to the gang- way only to meet his death. A braw- ny imperialist, with one blow of hia aword, cut the poor fellow down, rotohing him lifeless upon the deck. In an instant the deck of the Aza- line was & scene of wild confusion. The armed horde slaughtered the de- fonceless crow wherover they met them, and the crack of fire-arms mingled with half-muttered appeals merits, and show you what a regular one dollar size bottle will do. ~For | 17 MereY- wlo Jond. K. Tah @°"| The look-out, at the first alarm, glided over the bow, and di Satorn, ‘gained the. boat in salsty. where they crouched low for the time boing. The man at the wheel and two of the watch had also managed to elude the blows of the Obnamen, leaving them in possession of the vessel. Daring all this_time neither Tom Pepper nor myself had been idle. Aroused by the exultant yels of the Manchoos,ws leaped from our berths, and rovolvers in hand rushed on deck to find the vessel in possession of the enemy. There was nota ghost of a show forus. That was apparent ata. glance, and the ruffisns who. were crowding and jostling each other in their eagerness to gain the cabin was sufiicient warning to us to leave as rapidly as pomsible, happened to think of the bost I had left towing astern, and motioning to Captain Tom to follow me, we glided over the stern, slid down the pliant paiater without being observed by the yelling throng, and the next instant we were clear of the Azalene drifting astern. “Vessel and cargo gone to thed—1,” growled Captain Tom, as be hs tiller, gaziog intontly s+ the fefnk outline of the'besutiful craft which he had 8o latoly commanded. “If ho had been taken in a fair stand-up fight I would not have ssid & word. But I awpect all hands were ssleep, and dearly they have paid for tho' long wiok they were indulging In,” and with his head bent forward he sank into a deep raverle. Tn the meanwhile the Azalene, un- der the bungling sesmanship of the Mauchoos, was slowly forging ahcad, pointed towsrd the main land, the rugged outlines of which were sharply defined above the light silvery masses of fog which atill rested lightly on the water. The glow of & camp-fire, the occa- sional boom of a gong, the drowsy cry of a sleepy sentinel, was all that reached our ears, as we eat cold, mis- erable ani_motionless in the light shallop Azalona. Suddenly Captiin Tom lcoked up, ¢lanced keenly sshere, and in a low ‘whisper asked me for my revolver. 'You take charge of the boat,” he said. ““It will be fully four hours yet before daplight betray us. Once we fell'into yon devil's hands, and death by torture will be our fate. I have now aplan inmy head which may work and may not. At all events T shall try it. May-as well die one way as another. Al Isskis silonce and obedience. It will take until daylight for thoss lubbers to work the prize up to an anchorage, and befére the sun is re’ll either be on the deck of the Azalene, in possession, or we'll be food for the fishes. Now give way, lads; pull softly, and pull me on shore.” Idid not ask any questions as to the plan he had in his brsin. Captain Tom wa3 not very communicative at the best of times, but when he had anything desperate on hand he want- ed everybody to stand clear and leave him along. Cautiously wo meared the rocky beach, and selecting a ridge of rocks running out frem shore, we managed to form aslight leo from the swell which broke incessantly over the rough surface. Clamberiog up_on the slimy uncer- tain formation, which could have only been scaled by a seaman, and a deter- mined cne at that, Captain Tom elowly house shot across the Azalenes deck as Captain Tom tacked off shore, shaping a course for Hang Kong, and when daylight dawned actoss the ocean we had left the dangerous 1.»?0 0 EAsT cality far astern, but we could still make out the spot by the heavy cloud of smoke arising on high. We reached our destination without further difficulty or molestation, and although the stroogest inducements wers thrown out to me to continue in the trade, I refused, taking my eharo | of the profits and quitting the shores of the Celestial empire, which had no particular charms for we. That, my lads, was my last cruise in a0 opium smuggler. IT WILL NOT STRAIGHTEN TEETH, but SOZODONT will vit- alize and beautify them, and impart a delicious fragrance to the breath. I cculd make out the outlines of houses, together with the majestio proportions of a pagoda or joss house, which at once stamped the position as government sta'ion. My esr was stramcd to cateh the slightest sound, but bey:nd the mut- tering of the surf breakivg lazily on the shore, I heard nothing that weuld indicate any unwonted excitement. The watch fires continued®o burn brightly, but the calls of the sentinel bad long since ceascd, and silence reigned over the land. An hour passed by, the longest I ever experienced. My auxiety was gettisg the best of mo, and I was on the poiut of going in search of Captain Tom, when low whistle annouaced the return cf my superior, who the next instant swang himself over the sbarp, jagged points of the rocks and dropped lightly into the boat. “Getting worked up, ehl Well, T am all right; luck bas favored me, and 1 stepped over the forms of a score of sleeping braver. 1 got what I wanted; have succeeded 80 far ia all my plans, and you will see fun presently. Ab, there is the Azalene working in shore. Non, take your revolver, keep your eyes open, and follow me when I give theword. We must drop slongside the Azalene quictly, noiselessly, and await events.” crew haudled the oars with nd decision, while I retained my position at the tiller. The light haze and mist still huog over the water, so that so small an object a1 an open beat could scarcely be discovered ex- cept by very sharp eyes, and China- men ore not proverbial for keenness in that respect. We glided along- side with scarcoly a ripple to betriy our presencs, while the jabberiug of the natives on deck was heard inces- santly. Dropping the boat down into the deepest thadow cast by the huge mainsail, we bided our time, occasion- ally peeping over the rail and watch- ing the victorions Manchoos, who, as they stalked about the deck of the Azalene, Jittle dreamed that tho sur- vivors of the prize were 8o close to them. As for Captain Tom, he watch- ed incessantly the dark outline of the shore, mutteringin a low tcne to him- self. Suddenly a bright, flickering light ahot up from the pagoda, bringing out ita proportions and quaint carvings in bold relief. Then in half a dozen lo- calities the ruddy blaze of fire burat forth, until it seemed as if the entire station had been given over to the torch, The flames sproad and increas- ed with alarming rapidity, followed by the shouts aund- yells of the alarmed and helf-awakened Chinamen. Irreg- ular discharges of firesrms rang out on the mornivg sir, mingled with the full, deep tones of the immense alarm-gong, sud then it was I began tosee into the daring plan of Gaptsin Tom, whosepale festures wore lit up with asmile of gra- tified triumph. He tapped his revol- er significantly as the blaze increased tinging the water with a blood-red hue, to which I nodded a ready assent . On board the Azalene all was confu- sion and excitement as they ran exci- tedly back and forth, asif undecided what coursoto pursur. A loud hail from the shore was heard, a dozen voi- ces replied, and then we heard the Manchoos tumbling over the side into their long, sharp boats. With inces- nt jabbering, all hands talking at the same time, they shoved or pulled ra- pidly toward the burning station wi out ever looking behind them. Captain Tom allowed them to gain a good start in shore, and then he bec- koned me to foliow. Over the low rail we vaulted, closely followed by the men 'who had stood by us so well, and they, catching up the scattered weapons left by the Manchoos, rushed upon tho as- tonished few who had been left in charge of the prize. ‘The rapid crack of our revolvers ai- ded them in ridding the Azilene of the long tailed scoundrels, who, to avold certain death, hurriedly sprang over the side, swimming lustily for shore, now but a short distance, off. The hub-bub and din, together with the crackling flames, had effectually covered our movements, and wo were in full poseszion of the gallant craft again without a suspicion ashore of what was going on on board the prive. The light from the burning tsmple, streamed brightly across the water, envelopiug the Azaline in a fiery gloom from truck to keelson. Onehand had taken the wheel, others had hauled the sheets aft, aud the little clipper braced upsharp on the wind, with her broadside presented full to the turbu- lent crowd on shore, who, urged on by the frantic efforts of the officers, wore endeavoring to extinguish the flames thathad gathered tomuch headway for any hopes of eaving the doomed ‘buildings from the devouring element. The first intimation the Manchoos had that anything was wrong on board the Alalene was a round shot from Long Tom, which went crashing into the lower portion of the pagoda, sosttering huge masses of the burning ‘material high in the air. The second doso was grape and cannister, which sent many a long-tailed celestial to his long home. The balance ran for their lives, seeking cover and protec- tion from ' the danth-dt:ling guns of the ssucy opium_smuggler, leaving temple and dwelling o the mercy of the famee, Tho lest flash of the doomed joss- ment and every imperfection.
