AN ASYLUM FOR ONPHAN DOGK ANI SIKAY TABRIES, Philadelpbia Record. Among all the institutions which chiaracter zo Philsdelphia s the City " stonds out ‘than this mstitation, which is located at 1212 Lowbard stecet, there is no other of the kind o4 the face of the earth. - Besldes being an asyluai for ths fel'ne crphan, the in- sti'ution serves af'a gateway to the catand dog paradise. The *‘refuge’” is purely non-soctarian in its charac- ter. ‘The cat or dog which was once the property of chiistian, Jow or pa- #80, be it Thomas or Tabita, without | diztinction of race, color or previous | condition, is admitted to the asylum if it is in need of a home. The home- loss, friendless felme orphan, who has been the tirget for ragged and unfeel- ing street Arabs and showered with brickbate and boot jacks as it sang its plsintive melodies in the silvery light on a summer’s evening, is recoived at the city refuge by kind hesrts and ministering bands. Alhough this home has been tablished for about seven yesrs, ita existence until recently has been com- parutively unknown by s majority of the people of Philadelphia. During tho last year 3514 animals were re- ceivod at the refuge, and sinco the es. tablishweut for the imstitution 13,620 have been cared for. The refuge now receiving an average of 120 cats & week. he greater portion of the refugees to this asylum have out- lived their usefulness, or areof that class whose lot from infaocy has besn an ““auhappy one.” The unfortunate creaturas that have been turned out to die of starvation, or that never had a home to be turned out of, are being brought to the refuge in incroasing numbers, and are either provided with grod hemes or chloroformed out of their misery. As far as poesible homes are provided fer such grimalkina as aresound in body and mind and are comely in appearance. It must not be inferred, however, that anybody and everybody in quest of a good mouser ‘househol can go to the refuge, make their selec- tion sand walk away with it without questions belng asked. The person who seeks a pet from the refuge must come well recommended as possessing a k'nd heart and as teing amicably dupwled toward the dependent ‘‘or- phavs.” Appearances are often de- ceptive, and 1t is possible for the man- agers of the refugs to be misled in their conclusione concerning the per- 50 to whom they bave intrusted the keeping of their wards. So whena cat or dog is transferred from the refuge (o tho custody of some private famly, one of the officers of the a-y- lum looks a‘ter the indentured mal by visiiing it periodically at its new home to ascertain its condition.
