The = pro- prietor of the pill foundry was absent at the time of his arrival, and the assistant was a green country boy, whose knowledge of the drug but ness was yet to be va ned. The colo- nel ordered the yourg man to measure him out a quart of whisky. The youth took down a larga jar, the con- tents of which mrmbjed’ the desired article in appewrance, and flled the bottle, with which the colonel smbled off home. Mr. Johneon tcok what was left of the ru'phuric acid and informed the soldier that he would send him down a bettor quality of liquor in return, and betock himee!f to his store, mar- veling at the strength of practiced di- gestive organs. — A Very Natural Mistake. Frum an Exchange. A young mas creek came into town one day lat week tobuy & presont for his girl. His wondering gsze beiog transtixed by the grote:que displey in one of the dry goods windows, ho entered. the store and bashfully stepped up toa pretty young lady behind the counter. “How much are thosel” inquired, pointing to a pair of handsomely wrought nickel-plated garters in the window. “Seventy-five cen's,” sald the young lady, bandiog out the articles in ques- tion and blusbing slightly. I think they're kinder purty, don’t youl” inquired the young man, anx- ious to obtain somebody else’s opinion. “Very,” replied the young miss; “they’re the latest style.” “Everybody wears them, don’t thev?” continued the young man. “Almost everybody,” eaid the ung lady, affecting an uaconceraed ing to get them for s girl 1 aid the young man, rathér Do you think she will like them “I think #e might—I —I—T don't know—,” returnd the lady, blushing again. ““Well, T hardly know myself,” re- plied the young man, picking up one of the dainty articles aad examining it closely, “You don’t suppose they’ll be too large, now do you?” “Why, I—I—," stammered the young lady, the blush growing deeper. +They seem sorter big like,” con- young mav, not, noticiny . “Bat, of courso, ‘would not be certain. "And when one of the men olerks came and explained_his mistake, the young man from the creek struck & bee-line for bis team, and in a very brief space of time was teating toward home at a rate that threatened to ir- retrievably ruin the old family horse. Ho won't buy and bracelets now, until he is married. —— Ben. Wade's Courage. New York Times- As everybody knows, Ben. Wade was not a man 1o be bullied or fright- eued. His course as an opponent of slavesy in the national senate during the fierce excitement prroeding the civil war proved this conclusively. He was one of the few Abolitionists whom . the southern fire-eaters made no effort to intimidate; they knew that he was incspable of fesr and. would fight desperately when ‘driven to it. One of the causes of their knowledge is thus recited: During a debate on thehomestead bill Wade used language in reply o Robert Toombs, which it was believed, would compel the Geor- gim to send the Buckeye a chall everal of bisfriends begged hi to modify his speech, but he would not. Finolly r. Toombs indi- oated " his intent to call his versary to account, which was recei ed as if expected. The southerners then saw that the starday abolifionist had deliberately sought a g with the intolent champion of state righta. The same evening friend of the Geo- g'an called on Wade to see if he would retract the offensive. “No,” he re- e § combat.” *‘“That's just what I want.” “You surely can’t be earnest Mr. ‘Never was more 0. You ree that we northern men don’t with'a/ while stol, but not with 3 ‘ade could hit a doilar nearly » hundred yards. ibject afterward, “If Toomts had challenged me t] me, as I sup- posedhe would, I'd have put a patch 00 my coat over my heart, and made him do likewise. He'd have got de- moralized, 1 think. when he had see: modrawing & bead on_his patch, and he'd hs i — Z_if T wouldn’t have cut his patch the frst fire.” It ia useless to add that Toombs never sent the cartel; nor did any_southerner ever challenge Wade, whatever words he might use | on the floor or in private, aud he cer- tainly used very strong ones. The fire-eaters were brave enough, but they wera not 80 avxious to fight as they protended to be. And when they did fighs they were very likely to have sll the advantage on their side. Buccesssul Sheep Me; The San Antonio (Texw) Erpress thua does one f the. successful shesp men of the empire state: During the st five years, the wool growing in- torests of wostern Texas has undor- gone a wonderfully rapid develop- ment, and the succoses of many who embarked in the businers have ex- ceeded ther most sangu'ns expecta- tions or hope. Men without mesns and with no hiog, scarcely, sve their energy and g-od common sense, bave worked into the business, finaily se- cored small flocks, and have built them-elves up. Some of them have already grown rich, and sl may be said to be making money and passing from a spbere of independengg to independent cir- It will be interesti benefit to the country 1o ‘‘write up’ some of these successful sheep men, and we sball at present give the ex- perience snd earnings of Mr. J. O. Sullivan, who came t) western Texas from Mootreal, Cavads, during the fall of 1876. Mr. Sullivan purchated of wool brought but 16 cents per pound. Mr. Sullivan’s ranch was es- tablisbed vn Arencso creek, ten miles eart of Fort Clark, where he has se- cured about 25,000 acres of fine graz- ing land. Last June Mr. Sullivan purchased 800 improved ewes, for which 8110 per herd was paid. These two lits of ewes are all that Mr. Sullivan pue- chased, though he lostno time snd spared no means in securiog the best of bucks with which t) grade up his flock. Hohas at present, in a separate herd, sixty fine bucks, worth on an verage, $25 a picce. The total num- ber of ewer, Spanith and improved, purchated by Mr. Sullivan, has becn 2,250. flock at present numbers 6,100 sheep, including spriog lambs, which may now bs considered raised. He sheared this spring 8,000 pounds of wool, which wassold to'T. H. Zander- son for twenty-six cents per pound, or 0. This was but asix month’s clip, which would make ths yeat’s pro- duction range in the vicinity of 16,000 pounds, worth ful'y $4,000. The entire amount paid out to build up the flock is in_ round numbers $4,500, which he now almost gets back in a single year, and it rcely three years since he embarked in the busincss. The gen- eral running expenses have been about forty-five conts per head of sheep per yoar, and basing an esti- mate on what the present grade of his sheep will produce, they may be put downas worth one dollar a head, or fifty-five cents profit, at the lowest figire. The sheep srs comstantly impreving, both in wool and general value, and the expenses are decreas- ing. Mr. Sullivan counts his sheep ranch to-day tobe worth, incl all things, fully $10,000, which is considerably more than twice as much a8 he has expended during the three years in establishing it. His increase ‘this apring from 2,400 owes was 2,100, and the sheep could not well look better or the business be more en- couraging than it is. —_— BABY PRIZES, $600.
