This probably was the rewon why Drummondville was selected as the lace in which to locate these fs ries, and tho farme's in the vicinity cn’ always find a ready market for this kind of wood at about $2 50 and $300 percord. It Tequires 8 new stack or saddle, or & modification of the old one, which connected with a cast iron cham: the exhaust base a pipe leads about uarter of the wasts steam; this is orced into the chamber, and creates a great draft through the air pipe, and also draws down the hot products of combustion from the stack. The Stem, sparks, and dust are driven with terrific force through and down a peculiar cast_iron ehisld, meeting the hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, with the carbon ta the fire box, and the result is almost perfect combus- tion. The saviog in fuel, wood or coal, is fully one third, as proved by thoroughly dried, from whence they are taken into the factories and given tothe roughers, who, in an incredi- bly short space of time, bore a hole in the centrs, & couple of inches desp, turn about the esme space and then cut off the length required for a spool The machines used for this purpose are revolving planers, in the centre of which is arevolving giblet orbit, and immediately to the right a small cir- cular saw with a gauge set to the proper size for the spools. The roughers receive one and a half cents per groas for their work, and experi- enced men c3n turn out from one hun- dred to one hundred and thir'y gress per day. The round blocks pass from thsm to the finishers, who place them in machines which give them the shape of spcols, and make them quite smooth The spcols are thrown loorely into a large cylinder, which revolves slow- ly, to that tte spools are polished by the con: fo time. On be'ng tak the cylinder they are placad in a hop- per with sn opening at the bottom, through which they pass down a alide for inspection. Here the inspector sits and watches closely to see that no imperfect spools are allowed to pass, very small knct or scratch is suffi¢cient to condemn them. They are packed in large hoxes, made the proper s'se, and no additional packing is needed. The packers receive one quarter cent per gross for packing, and a amart boy who is accustomed to the work can k about two hundred gross per dsy. Oue proprictor ships over two million spools per month to Eogland, and another firm ships over o illion spools to Glasgow, Scot- land. P.ultry on the Farm. To keep poultry on the farm is econ- omical, When s farmer keeps a herd of cowe, & flock of shesp, together with horses and boge, there is slwass room on the farm for 8 good stock of poultry. Even when sll the co suoep and hegs are kept ht, there lm.uly to keep a pig, ih order that the refuse aud house slops may bo utilized; the ssme tense that poultry are valuable—they are the seavengers of the farm. There is no class of fowls that require very much room on the farm._Still, they do require room and attendance, ‘and it is possible to keep them in such a shiftless manner that they will be found ubprofitable. All kinds of poultry may be kept, pro- vided they may have the run of the bera-yard; but they mustbe kept in such & maoner as to prevent their ravages in garden and grain fields. Tarkeye, ducks, geese and hens may be kept all summer without using one squsre yard of room available for any other_purpose. Care should be ob- served, in providing for ducks and goese, that they may not have the privilege—for such they will deem it —of fouling the water required for the stock, or making themselvgg, a nuisance in any other mauner. Young chickens and turkeys will re- quire some care for the firat fow weeks of their existence;’ after that they may be trusted to care for_themselves to a grest extent Poultry may be raised and a'fiock of hens kept, pro- ducing eggs all summer without the outlay of ono dollar for grain. Sour milk from the dairy is very good for young poultry, and there are many other articles of refuse on the farm that can be profitably used for th maintenance of fowls. Now, why luxuries egge during summer, and also of P poultry more than they dot I know that it is too often the case that all the eggs produced on thefarm are sold for groceriea and other small items of Anthricite .
