Hook and Ladder Truck No. 1, that lies in one side of the double fire en- ginehouseintheCityHallPark, hasbeen supplied witha complete set of burg- lars’ toole. Foreman Wolfe and his men have made such gcod use of these instruments that it is now determined to give other sets to trucks 6, 8, and 10, which, like No. 1. ate mainly em- ployed at fires below Canal street. Shicf Hugh Bonner originated the idea of thus equipping these liremen Ho realized the necessity of devis- ing some moaus to overcome the hindrance to firemen arising out of the present custom ot building stores and bus'ness establish- ments with the streng‘h of fortresses. The builder of to-day expends much ingenuity in providing means to keep out burglars s to keep cut fire. Flchey feow abuthirs chrad s every [door and window in the modern stractures, and even the hatchwaya are built as if each was intended to_cover the com- panionway on & monitor. The mod- ern burglar is provided with the most practical and istic weapons with which to attack these defences, but until Mr. Bonnmer furgished “One Truck” with che burglars’ tols, the firemen depended entirely upon OLD FASHIONED INSTRUMENTS. No. 1, for instance, had nothing more than a battering ram and a crow- bar. The crowbar was a round rod of stee!, with ore end pointed and the other rounded ioto a handle. Its days aro numbered. The battering ram, on the contrary, will ever bea formidable tool. It is shaped like the piston of a syringe, the handle be- ing six feet long and made of very bard wood. The ram is hslf iron and half wood, ia very heayy, and is pro- vided with leather handles for the men who batter with it. With half a dozen men at the handle and four men at the ram, it is casy to knock a hole in the side of the house, and ouly a little more difficult to break inan iron chutter. Now, this company hss a set of tools fashioned after the “%kit” that was vscd in the robbery of the Manhattan bank, the most com- plete and costly set ever captured in this country. For the firemen the tools are as well made as the originals, but they are considorably Jarger than those the burglars used.” Only seven of the burglars’ tools are given to the firemen, who had no need fcr the “bit” and other instruments that wers especially useful in safe-break- ing. The largest of tho implements is an cctagonal bar of fins steel, four It terminates ina shorp-edged bent claw, and its upper end is fitted with a socket into which another bar for greater leversga can be inserted. This “jimmy,” asit is called, 13 warranted, on account of its 5120 and strength, to BREAK THE WAY THROUGH ANY DOOR into or under which it can be inserted. The maesive psdlocks that are 8o com- moply ured would nct withstand its force whea cne man welded it; yet half a dozen men can work together withit. Another “jimmy” is of the samo shape, but much shorter. third implement is called a “dog jim- my.” Onono end it bas a hook with which to tear out staples and wrench off locks, and on the other two di- ioned bits of atick a compaund of chlorate of potash and sulphate of an- timony. At first his matches were made like a comb, a number of them being on the same piece of wood, s0 that they could be broken off as wan- ted. They bore the name of Lucifer— not, a5 is commonly supposed, in allu- sion to the Prince of Darknees, whois | sometimes erroncously called by tlmj name, but in pleasant reference to the | Morning Star, or “‘light bearer.” Half i a dozen years after Mr. Jones intro- daced matches phosphorus was added to the composition and soon becamo one of the Jeading combustibles used. This useful agent bad been known for 8 hundred and fifty years, but it was expensive to producs and risky to handle. Modern improvement have reduced its cost and vastly increased its production. An immense quanti- ty of phosphorus js overy year used in match-making, being over ninety par ceat, of all that roduced. A pound of the article will make a mil- lion matcher. Some matches are made without phosphorus, cholorate of pot- ash betng substituted for it. So neces- saty do these useful aids to civiliza- tion seem to our very existence that it is hard to contemplate a atate cf society which prevailed only half a century ago in which the beat people had t> knock flint-atones togathir, when they wanted a light. Mr. Jones must have bad great difliculty at first in parsusding people that his matches were better than flints. - Old geutle- men and others who were set in their ¥ay their ways were opposed to the innovation, and, especially when thev heard mention of the name of Lucifer in connection with it, suspected some influence of the evil ove. Even if good old Mr. Jones should not have a monument erocted to him, his memo- ry will be konored in ths fact that the fruit of his happy thought has brouzht verging jaws, like the maguified end of a track-lifter for the same uses. Then there are a rivet-cutter, a steel wedge for bursting iron doors, snd two sledges with which to hsmmer the cutter and wedges. The sledges ave made of iron, but the burglars’ sledges upon which they were modeled were made of copper, presumably because that metal is eofter and therefore less noisy. These tocls aro keptin a box gt as boen buslt for this purposo on the forward fifth wheel of the machine The boxis open, and a strap holds the tools in_place. Assistant Foreman Jsmes Heany, who was a member of the old volunteer force, says that with these tools the firemen can effect an enfrance into almost avy building ina minute’s time; but with the old- 00| fashioned tools is often took many minutes to brake down a door or wrench offa shutter, and meanwhile the fire within the building was gain- ing » headway that increased the diffi- culty in extinguishing it. There is very little Toom left on the hook and ladder truckof to-day for further improvements and_additions: Strapped on the body of the machine are two fire extinguishers, a calcium light buraer and reflectors, and_the two cylinders, one of oxygen and one of bydrogen, that constitute fuel for that brilliant_light. Then there are lanterns, and lately there have been added red sigual lights for stopping clovated railroad trains at night, and YOU NEVER HEARD A DENTIST say that SOZODONT was not a good article to preserve theteath and gums. This fact is not to be sontroverted. hat gives it such prominence asa wash? It is compounded, after years of scientific plodding, of matecisls caloolated to harden. the gums, remove the septic acid, and avoid putrefaction. So all Indies say of SPALDING's GLUE. They use it to make Lovers stick. Facts that We Know. There are also pitchforks wherawith to handle hay or the material used in mattresses, shovels to remove rubbish and to throw sand on burning gas, great knives at theend of poles with which the tin roof of a building canbe cut, and hooks with which to roll up the tin when it has beon loosened. There are peculiar hose moz- sles also, one of which is bent and strapped to a pole for use in_vaults; another ends in four re- volving jets, and when let down into an inaccessible cellar or between the decks of a vessel will saturate every- thing above, below and around it within a distance of twenty-five feet from its center. Another nozzle is called a “‘Siamess,” because it com bines the stream of two engin still avother, recently mtmdnced, four streams in one, just as the new fire tower does. ‘There are also extension ladders and the old tashion- ed hook, the latter still frequently used on tottering walls and stubborn ceilings. Finally, in addition to the axes, poles and lengths of hose that go with the new nozzles, there is the patent smoke bag that the trepid firemen wear when entering a building too full of smoke to permit of breathing except by artificial meaus. The rubber vessel holding air enough for thirty minutes’ breathing—is strapped on the fire- mav’s back, and its pipes lead to & joiut that fits his mouth. With tight gloves cn, tight fimng pectacle-like boxes on his eyes, an & clasp like a clothes-pin on the end of his note, be feels his way in a dark and suffocating atmospheregy holding in one hand a rope (which is. also tied to . his beit), with which to signal to the men out- side, and having fastened to a button on his cost 8 whistle on the end of a rubber bag, with which he can call for help without taking his mouth from the orifica of the air bag. THE MATCH MAN. DEATH OF OLD MR. JONEW, OF OHIO, WHO MADE THE FIRST FRICTION MATCHES. Philadelphia Times. 01 Mr. Jones is dead. There were many of his name, but we bear his ‘memory in specially grateful remem. brance as he passes away at'the age of 89 and is laid to rest in Chillicothe, Ohio. It is to Mr. Jones that we are chiefly indebted for friction matches. As with the steam engine, e tele- graph and the electrio light, there 'moth-uvh-bou' nh.u-' time were ex comfort to a'l manner of peopls, and that his invention, spparently so small and so humble, hus tsken a conspici- cous place in the worlds march of pro- gress. po Is A ‘Tne Texas Cattie Drive.
