Two Houses Blown to Flinders, and Barns Tora from their Foundations. Telegraphic Communication Interrupted. Shortly after 6 o'clock last evening the atmosphere of the city indicated a coming wind storm of extraordivary proportions. The barometer foll two inches within fifieen minuter, and the sky to tle west and morth becsme overcast with a lurid glow. A few moments later the cyclons burst upon the town with terrible fury, sweepipg heavenward immense clouds of sand and dirt, tearing off shutters, tlowing down fencer, unhingiog gates and dis arranging the telezraph rud telephone wires ttrovghout the city. The streets were deserted. The terrific velocity of the wind rendered pedestrianism more than dangerous. Gusts of eand whirled and eddied along the thor- ! oughfare and dashed agsinst window and door, hiding all view of the sur- PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. Capt. Murdoch, U. §. A., went east Sanday. Mrs. 8. P. The corner stone will be laid with approprists ceremony at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening. The bishops and clergy and lay delegates to the annual ! council, the governor of the state and rounding landscape. In the north part of the city the effects were felt most severely. At the commencemen®. of the etorm the house of A. J. Miller, situated on Irene street, in Shinn’s addit'on, was struck by the cyclore, hited from its foundations and carried over the fence into an adjoining lot, where it fell with a crash, which dashed it into & thousand fragments. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were both in the building at the time of the catas'rophe. Asesistant Postmas‘er 0. 0. Campbell, who lives nesr by, hearing the mnoise of the storm, rushed to the window and saw the house fall, a long string of lum- ber marking the spct. He hastened to the scene of the accident and found BMr. Miller Iying cn the ground, out- eide the ruins, bleeding and uncon- scious. Mrs. Miller, though seriouely bruised, was conecious and able to walk to a neighb ring residence, Mr. Miller at Grst wos thought to be fatally injurcd and was boroe on a ehutter to a neighbers house, while Dr. Van Camp was summoned. After some time he re- gained consciousness and s now | thought to be out of danger. His escape and his wife's from instant death seems nothing shoit of mirsca- lous. "The cenfre of tho sturm appears to have been over Shion's addition. At the same time in which Mr. Miller's bouse was destroyed a small frame dwelling by Ittner's brick yard was at- 80 demolished, no cne however being hurt. Mr. Ittner's brick yard suffered heavily frcm the cyclone, two k-los of brick just ready for burning being entirely} destroyed, entailing a loss of at Teast 8500 cn the propristcr, Be- these two zccidents, Mr. Blikesly's barn was moved from its foundation, and snother barn adjacent was nearly demolished. Throuzhout the whole northern part of the city more or less damage was done to fences, sheds aud outbuildings. The force of the wind was beyond comparison. At one point, in a single yard, the trees at opposite corners were bent almost fo the ground in dif- ferent directions. At Council Bluffs and the transfec the fores of the storm was felt, though in a somewhat less degree. The wind tore off the tin roof of ‘the postoffice and linded it in the middle of Broad- wsy. At the transfer empty cars were overturned in every direction, a pcr- tion of the depo® sheds was blown off and perfect havoc played with the telegraph lines bstween the bridge and the transfer, so that up to 12 o'clock to-day only one wire was work- ing between Chicago and this city.
