Soott | ed and thehorse tumbled into the well, et iking Green and ccushing him 10 the earth. The ooly thirg that prevented him from being instant'y killed was a box suspended by a rope. This sustained sufficient weight to per- mit him to bresthe. Scott, reslizing that the frantic efforts of the horse would kill the man below, seized an ax and jumped down upon the animal, wheu a life and death. muggl- ensued. He at length managed to deal the horse a fatal blow. Every time the horse struggled large quantities of earth poured down upon Green. Sco't climbed out and ran a mile and a half for help. Returning as quickly as possible men set to work cutting the horue fo gieces and hoisting it out of the well, Mra. Green was present and cheered her husband by telling him he would soon be relessed. The poor man was suffering intense agony, and said he could not live a minute longer. He bade his wife fare- well in choking sobs. With frantio efforts the animal was torn limb from limb until the last piece was tora away, and 'the unconscious man was found buried to his chin in dirt and gravel saturated with blood, and was Tifted to the surface. He was carried to his home, where restoratives were applied, and in a short time he spoke. Although no bones were broken, he was badly crushed and braised, and ‘may be confined to his bed for weeks. A Curlous Fact About Bass. Albany Journal. In a recent letter, Seth Green, who is authority in all matters piscatorial, discourses briefly on the best means of angling for bass. Among other state- ments he made the following, which will be interesting to a great many “gimple wise men,” who have the good sense and leisure to go a-fishing: It the fish is on the lower y, you will not take any more, but if he is onone of the upper flies, you will be sure to take more if there ‘are any in sight. We learned this fact and publiched it years ago as a curious babit of the bass family. But we knew the fact long before we discovered the reason Nothing in our angling expe- rience ever caused us more perplexity or 8o greatly excited our curiosity. It took us a week of patient observation of what used to be the best trolling ground in the St. Lawrence—in the neighborhood of Gananoqua—to clear up the mystery. But we finally suc- oceeded to our entire eatisfaction, and hero is the simple solution: The bass is a sccial fish. He likes company. Where thereis one there are more. They move in schools. ‘When one strikes the troll there are always othersin the neighborhood. When the lonken -on see the struck fish *‘outting up” they “‘go for him” under the impression that he has founda ““good thing,” of which they ars unwilliog he should have the mo- nopoly. As the lnfior on feeling the strike at once “‘reels up,” the rave- nous rascals follow in pursuit, but never pats their leaping and flounder- ing companion, because they fancy he is trying to seizo and gorge the *'tid- bit” they wish to share with him. This purpose keeps them either even with or behind him, but they never pass him. Hence none ever take the fly above the one on which the cap- tive is booked, but are pretty sure to be beguiled by any fly below him. A Lawyer's Rage. Little Rock Gazette, Some years ago a patent medicine man of St. Lou's wrote a confidential letter to a young man in this city re- questing him to send tho names of all the very fleshy men in Little Rock. The young man, with a fall appreci- ation of a happy plan suddenly struck upon, sent the names of all the very lean ‘men in town. The effect was very decisive. A short time afterward a prominent Jawyer, whose leanness has ever been a subject of remark, ro- ceived a letter, which read: “Dear Sir: - Our American anti-fat remedy will whittle the fat from you in six days. Send us 25 cents.” The letter was (thrown aside, not without a few exprossions of Igrati- tude. The next mail brought another with the following contents: “Dear Sir—If you have decided to surrender your paunch, send us the 25 cents.” By this time the genial man was warm, He cursed all the patent med- icinomen in the world. Several days after this a boy came to the office and handed [the lawyer a letter. On the envelcpe was written: ‘‘Opened by mistake; Miss Jackson.” The lawyer took the letter and read: Dear Str: We are sorry that your abdominal protuberance is giving you so much trouble. This is your own fault, for our American anti-tat will act like & drawing knife in whittling you down. The lawyer sat for fifteen minutes indeep meditation. Hewas disturb- ed by the entrance of a lean minister who drew a letter from his pocket, and handing it to the lawyer, remarked: “T don’t understand this.” This lettor read: “Dpar Sim: Don't feel that you aroalwaysto be a burden to yoursel. We can boil off your stomach until you'll bo as trimasaracer. Mr. — a prominent lawyer of your city, who, as you know, is & perfect mountain of flesh, is being treated by us.” The lawyer didn’t eay » word; but when the minister had gone, he ad- dressed the following letter to the St. Louis doctor: “If you ever send me another one of your disbolical docu- monts, ll stick & six shooter down your throat and fire every shot into Your infernal stomach.” The doctor has stopped writing. ‘Wild Dogs in Yellowstone Valley. The earth was wrapped in darknese, aud nothing was to be seen but now and then the faint flickering of a star. The dot- ing twain were nearly home, when somethingrubbedagainst the “lover’s” leg.
