On Wednesday evening one of. the U. 8. -petit jurors from the country’ thought he would-take in the city. He socordingly started out late in the eve- ning, and after imbibing very freely ata number of saloons finally struck the St. Elmo variety theatre, on Twelfth street, where he was soon en tranced with the novel performance. Before the close of the night he was fourd by one of the officers of the force, desd drunkin & noighboring alley and was ignominiously Isnded in the city jail. The next morning when brovght before Judge Hawes he discoverod that he had been robbed of his watch and chaln besides sixty dollars in cash. Ho says he remembers having them oll when he entered the theatre, but they were gone when he was searched at the city jail. Two or three parties jostled him when he was inside the building, and ho was 80 intoxicated that robbing him was probably a mat- ter of Tittle difficulty. Up to this morning no clue had been discovered to the thieves and the vitim will probably lerra ale'son from his mishap, not to carry a watch, chain and sixty dcliara in money the next time he goes on sn explorivg x- pedition in a straugo city. So far, all have posi- tively refused to avail themselves of the offer. The men say that the ad- vauce only affects a small portion of the employes, and leaves the major- ity in the samo position in which they were befora the strike. They declire that they will have an advance of 20 per cent. or nothing, and announce thir determination of holding out all summer rather than submitting. He did nof care to stop at hotels, he said, and re. quested tke favor of acs'stance in se- curing & boarding place, which was done, and “Milord” registered at & boarding heuse on Capitol avenue Mr. J. J. Neligh, the detective, has watched c'o:ely the movements of the visitor being attracted by the ‘“char- acters” published in the Chicago pa- pers on Tuesday, The Tribune speak- irg of him ss “‘one of those bogus English lords who have been havinga splend‘d time down east—borrowiog money from young srots, spending it like milliona‘res, and winning the af- fections of foclish girls.” In Chicago, it is said, thst he was recogsized s a confidence man, and made haste to get out of the city, land- ing iu this city in his flight. Ho is elim built, about six feet tall, and hes a red fice and a pug noe. His appearseo is decidedly English, but he is very ordinary in his manuer aud address. According to our exchanges he first made his appearance a Jittle more than a year ago, being arrested in New York, whero he was' known as Lord Montague, for bigamy and playing the confidence game. He was in jail for some time, tut got out,—how could not bo ascertained, though he wasnot He was next heard of in Richmord, Va. a3 “Lord Arundel” he became engoged to a lady but was unmacked juct before the day set for the wedding. Another alias cf his is Lord Beaity. He has been under sr- rest in Canada, aud his photograph has appeared in The Police Gazatte three times, accompanied by accounts of his misdeeds in different places in the east. The detectives there know him as ““Country Dennison,” and con- sider him an expert in his line. While in this city he has ‘‘/aid low” and no one can surely b the worsa for his visit hera. The following tele- gram gives the rest of the story which caused the detectives to give up the “shadow” game, after notifying such persons as they thought should be in- formed of his true character: " ' CIcago, May 6.
