An honest, hard working carpen- ter, whose name it is not necessary to mention, recently fell in love with a certain woman, and in due time proposed mariage to her and was accepted. He sold some of his tools'und thus ratsed thirty or forty dollars, nearly all of which he gavye to his intended to help her purchase & wedding out- fit. He reserved two dollars to pay for the license. The wedding was to have taken place last Mondsy in the office of a justice of the peace on Douglus street. The license was procured, and the parties assembled to have the knot tied by the J. P. Suddenly it occurred to the intended bride that she would like to haye a lady friend of hers “stand up” with her, and so she determined to}go out her- gelf to fiad her, and bring the lady triend back with her. After sbe bad been gone about an hour the would-be bridegroom con- cluded that ebe was not coming back at all—but that she was going back on him, in fact, bad gone She has not yet returned, and is either still looking for that lady friend, or else she has ekipped out, being avout thirty dollars ahead by the transaction. On yesterday & green German immigrant, bound for the Pacific ocoast, was approached at Spoon Lake by a genteel looking young man, who engaged in conversation with him, and after drinking seversl glazaes of beer, gained his confi- dence. Learning that the German was going to Ban Francisco, the stranger asked, him if he had any gold, and upon his replying that he hed not, the stranger, whom we will call Mr. Bharp, told him that on the Central Pacific from Ogden to the coast, they took only gold, and that he would heve to buy some exther there, at Omaha, or at Ogden. Mr. Bharp happened to have $50 in coin which he would sell him, with a premium of 2 per cent added. The German accord- 1ugly gave him §51 in bills, and then csme ever to Omaha. Sharp, who bad eaid that he was also going West, gave him theslip, and did not accompany bim. The German, upon arriving at the Union Pacific depot attempted to pass one of the pieces for some arti cles of food, but it Was pronounced . g.—no gocd. On examination the coing were found to be “spiel marks,” made of yellow metal, and closcly resembling United Btates coin. These ‘*‘spiel ‘marks” are manufactured expressly for just such ewindling games as the above, and which are only played on the the greensst of greenics, &s anybody else could tell ata glance that they were worthless, or at lesst So sus- picious that it woullnot be rafe to handle them. The victim took the matter good- naturedly, and while exhibiting the “apicl-marks” he was asked for one of them by a bystander. He ro- plied very truly that they had cost him too much to give away ; he had paid as much for them as if they had been gold. He acknowledged that be had learned a good lessou. 1mportant Class Toor via Nev York City.
