Muddle—The Flennigan Porgery. A Telegraphie Denial by ©. B. Perkins. Corvéapondonse of the Bos. Lincoin, January 18.—The fight s over and the victory won. At 4 p- m. the jolnt convention met and began balloting, with but one man —Meyers— absent. Kverything was on the tip-toe of snxious expecia- tlon. The galleries, lobby aad every nook and cranny of the old capitol building was packed with s multi- tude of expectant people. When Abbott brought down his gavel for- eibly, all was quiet and everybody awaited the call of members. Am. brose rose, and answered, Savage; Aten, Baunders; Birkhauser, Davis; Carnes, ssunders. Everybody ex- pected him to answer as before, Hitchooek, but in deliberate tones be anmounced Alvin Baunders. A sensation then moved the crowd, and only by a quick stroke of the gavel did the president suc oved In quelling the disturbance. next came Chspman and Colby with the same nume in answer to their calls. Then & spontaneous burst of applause shook the walls of the chamber, and was with exceed- ing difculty brought to quietness. A wild enthusissm begun to pre- vail among the whole crowd, as Howe, Holt and every republican in the senate except Biyant and Hayes voted Alvin SBaunders. The members of the house came up to the same mark, and in the coridors of the building bexan a most tremendous uproar, as the elec tion of Baunders became cer. tain. The multitude swayed to and fro, men rushed to the door frantically and cou'd only by force be kept from foreing an entrance, whilea dozen reporters aud politicians were equally anxious to force their way out, ihat they might reach the telexruph offices and in‘orm therr friends of the good news. For some time it was im- possible to keep the members frum cisingjand shaking glad hands with thelr friends. Some with yise-like grip grasped the hands of those near them and with ill repressed tears io their eyes expressed their joy, and a general hand-shaking ‘ollowed the announcement—8aanders 88 votes, tavave 25, abeent 1, not voting 1. Gov. Saunders was outside, and the bland expression of that honest ‘nendly face showed full well the keen satisfaction with which he greeted his numerous friends. and Crounse, Manderson, andall his opponents who were in the capitol were among the first to offer congratulations. In the sireet a general rush oi ‘well-pleased politiclansand business men from all parts of the country were seen joco-ely expressing satia faction The Hilchoock men tske it philosopbieally, and look as if they were resigned to their irreme- diable fate. They deserve credit for their fe:lty to party, although 1t 18 said sixteen had agreed to vote for Hitohoock if he oould get votes enough to enable that number to pull bim through The Autis? How about the Autis? 1f your readers could have seen the aoction of passengers Omaha bound this evening they would have been strikingly reminded of a* Methodist revival meeting after the ‘‘descent of power” in the couversion of souls.
