Sunday afternoon the clerk at the 8t Charles Hotel, named Sioan, hired & horse and buggy at Ho- man's stable, and took Flan. nigan out riding, but eame back alone, since which time Flannigan has not been seen. When ¥lannigan left he put into {he possession of Sloan a letter and some keys, which he requested him to give to Mr. Irving Monday morn= ing. Sloan left the letter and keys at Mr. Irving's office, Mr. Irving not being in at the time. When Mr. Irving came mn, he opened the letter of Fiannigan, and was as- tounded to read the confession of Flannigan m regard to the job that had been put up by himself. Mr. Irving immeditely went to the St. Charles hotel and found Bloan, who admitted having received the letter from Flannigan to hand to him. Mr. Irving then immediately proposed that he should go to Lincoln with him. Sloan at first objected, but finally | consented, and to Lincoln they went on a special train that very morning. Awone others that the BEk re- | porter interviewed yesterday was | a young mechanie, a boarder at the hotel, and who was a chum of | Flannigan. Flannigan intimated that he was going to the Black Hills. Yesterday Bloan returned from tancoln and we interviewed him also, in order that he ight have his eay, too, =0 as to give all sides. He stated that Flannigan re- quested him to give the letter and keys to Irving. He didn’t know the tontents of the letter, but learned them afterwards when Irving read it aloud, and he (Sloan) judged that Flaunigan had msde a ralse. Sloan ¢laimed to bea con- fidsut of Flannigan, and was ar- ranging to go to the Black Hills with him. Sunday aftetiioon he told Stoan that he was going to Lmeoln. Sloan asked him if he was going away, and he replied that it was not best for him to know. Bloah took him out riding he complained of being cva, and got out near the Union Prcific headquarters, and bas not been seen since. The Views of Hon, Uharles H. Brown on that Resurrected Kescind- ing Convention, Although the BEE is a Republi- can paper, it apreciates honesty in any party, and hence n Apdlogy is needed for the publication of the fotier from Hon. €. H. Brown, giv- g his views upon the resurrected convention, & quorumiess portion of which pasced a resolution on Mon- day rescinding that iron-clad pledge. The letter, although addressed tn Hon. J. G. Megeath, Was given to us by Cotiheilman Shanuon, to whom Mr. Brown wrote saying that he had requested Mr. Megeath to hand him the letter, and Mr. Brown expresed e hope that the con- vention would simply adjourn : BENATE CHAMEER, } LincoLs, Jav. 11, 1877, Hon. J. G Megenth : T how nderstand that Dr. Lowe, president of the nominating county couvention last fall, bas assumed the authority to reconvene the dele- atesof that body. I hope the ru mor is unfounded and that the whole thing is a base fabrication of the enemies of our party. I do not know how the president of that body came to conc:ive the lucid idea that a body selected for a spe- cific purpose, after having fully dis. charged their duties and adjourned without date, could be re convened. T hud always supposed that such an sdjournment ended its life. This new medicine which revivifies and re-invigorates a dead body beats the dreams of the wildest al- chemist of ancient dsys. The thing should be patented. But aside from this objection, I deny the right of such & body, admitting it to be properly re-convened. by its ‘members to assume the authority to «peak for their constituents upon a matter arising at this late day—a. matter which, I understand by ru- mor, looks 0 rescinding the test resolution of the convention. This body, when re-assembled, cannot, in my judgment, possess any more authority to speak for the party | than any other equal number of re- sp ctable Democratic gentlemen that may by chance happen to get together. My great objection to the contem- plated setion is that it will bo inju- rious to the ivterests of the party. 1 do not understand how, at this time, it can be posible for any Demoerat t> look to a line of policy Which must necessarily weaken the strength of our party. If ever there was a critical junc ture demanding every Democrat to stand firm and true to the part that time is upon us ~ We owe it to the Democratic party at large to stand united and present to them our entirestrength. Nostepshould be taken that looks to the weaken- ing of any tie that binds us to- gether. This proposed action looks that way. The Demoeracy of the State have been looking to what we in Dougias county should do. Here- tofore, 1 am sorry to be told by Demoere!s outside of Douglas that We bave been objects of susp'cion and dstrust. This destroyed confi- dence and weakened the party. But when we assumed the position we did last fali, they took heart, and giving full credence to what we said, entered into the contest, and the result is a respectable num- ber of Demoerats in the tegidature — aud 8 wood starting of our party toward its final success in the State. Shall we now commence a retrograde movement ? Shall we in Douglasforever continne to be objects of distrust to our Dem ocratic brethren in sl parts of the State? I hops not. As sure as there is au abrogation of that reso- lution, we musi assume that atti- tude. For one, 1 wish to express my most unqualified disapprovsl of the policy looking to that end. I do not, and will not, impuzn any person’s motive, who acts in this matter. I believe 1n allowing every individual to entertain any views he may bave, and act upon them ; and yet I reserve the same for myself, and dissent n toto from the entire movement.
