They came from Kaneas and were going to the Black Hills, where the wife expect ed to support the family by doing washing for the miners. Murkle &Co. kept them at the Emigr.nt House for nothing, and yesterday the wife related tne condition of he: affairs at the Poiice Court, after Lav ing failed in obtaining assistance elsewhere. Policeman Byrne took | the case in band, aud in a few hours eollected twenty dollars among the business men. Mr. Kimball, gen- gral ticket agent of the Union Pa- gific, generously agreed to send the whole tamily to Siiney for fifteen dollars, thus leaving them five dol- lars, They will leave on this af- ternoon’s emigrant train. FELL BY ThE WAYSIDE. A Nevada Miner Claims to Have Been Kobbed of Abeut $300 Friday Night. James L. Campbell is tne name of a Nevada miner who arrived here Friday on a Union Pacfic train from the West. Hsis = half orphan, aged about thirty, and was on his way to Bt. Louis to visit nis ag.d mother, who had written to him gome time ago to come home He had saved up money enough to make the visit in & comfortable manner, and to give his mother some of his savings. He stopped at the Union Pacific Emigrant House, and at opight he came up to take in the town, but before he got through the town took him 1n. Like mauy others he fell by the wayside and among thieves. Hav- ing indulged freely in the ‘‘ardent,” he sauntered forth and encountered a female—a womsan of the town— to wuom nc introduced himself. He accompanied her to a house oi ill fame, where he spent an hour or two in her society. At last he re- turned to the Emigrant House in a fearfuily drunken condition. Next morniug when he awoke he found that he had been robbed of fourteen twenty-dallar guld pieces and twenty-tive dollars in silver, makmng $305 in all His coat haa been cut, and his pantaloons pocket draww up through the hole a1 d the contents extracted. Mr. Campbell, who was still con- siderably mixed, was & very angry man when he discovered his loss, and swore and tore around consid- erably. He informed the policé of the cu'cumsmnoes,’ and it is thought the robbery was committed by tb - woman, who, 1t appears, belongs | » the Council Bluffs fraternity of soiled doves. Late Saturday afiernoon the po- lice struck a different track, and ar- rested William H. Wil- n on the charge of having committed the robbery. He had gone the rounds with Campbell, and had, appeared over friendly. He was examined at the Police Court, and the evidence seemed strong enough to warrant Jud~e Po-ter in holaing him for trial at the next term of the District Court, placing his bail at $500, which he was unable to give, and he was accordingly sent to jail Campbeil was also held in custody to make sure of his testimony at the trial.
