A letter received at the Post Office Department, dated Sumter county, Alabama, September 29th, written by the special agent, sent to investi- gate the murder of the colored route agent there a month ago, states tha he has caused warrants of arrest to issue for nine men. He describes the State as being overrun with des- peradoes who terrify the blacks and raid their farms. October 5. The Commi man’s Saving and Trust Company say it is impossible to state the date of the first dividend. They have now only $45,000 in the treasury, but require $500,000 as & basis of a dividend of twenty per cent. Joseph Clare ot Bothel, Ohio, who was charged by the husband of the woman who murdered her lit- tle girl in this city last week, with having criminal intarcourse with his wife, makes a statement 1n this morning’s Commercial, in which, after relating circumstantially the incidents occurringlon the day of the murder, denies most positively ever having having had any mi- proper intercourse with Mrs. Per- kins, and can only reconcile Per- kins’ conduct toward him in this case with a conspiracy on his part against his wife, and a design to use him as an instrument for carrying out his scheme. : 8r. A Mormon lady, Miss Adams, re- siding at Bountiful, was brutally murdered last night in her ow: house, by bejng shot through the window by some unknown person President Dillon, Jay Gould and Oliver Ames, acoompanied by Gen- eral Superintendent Clark, Gen Wright, Agent Vining, Gen. BHREVEPORT, Oct. 4, ‘The Times editorially denies that the northern parishes of Louisiana nave agreed to compromise in divi- ding State officers between Repub- licans-and white conservatives. A similar fraud- ulent transaction of broker Sacia, disclosed a few weeks ago, will come up to-morrow. ‘The plaintiffs were induced to ex- change a steam tug worth $6,000 for city lots, which it afterwards turned out did not belong to the defendant and the titles to which were forge- ries. An investigation has revealed the fact that Larkin and his associ- ates had been doing an -extensive business in sw.ndling in real estate transactions, using false maps,deeds, ete. A great number of,these forged deeds and maps have been found in the county eclerk’s office. Some deeds conveying lands worth twen- ty thousand dollars, but the majori- ty ranging from $500 to $5,000. Clerks have been engaged several days drawtng up certified copies of these and other deeds which will be put in evidence on the trial. s TELEGRAPHIC. of James |- NEW YORK, Oct 5. A most disastrous and unprece- dented calamity occurred here yes- terday. A drove of wild Texan steers being driven through the street en route for Buffalo, escaped from a eareless driver, soon_ scatter- ed through the street 'and through- out the lower part of the city, and maddened by the shoutsof men and boys they rushed blindly in every direction. Many persons were in- | jured by the infuriated animals, and up to ten o'elock last mght _over 33 casualties was reported. It is not known how many of the.injmed will die, but some are badly injured internally, and others will be distig- ured for life. The excitementamong the people was indescribable, every- body in the streets armed wil tois, elubs, swords and knives, all confused and not knowing what to do. At first the police appeared to be much demoralized as well as the citizens. Bulls dashed down the streets into store windows, vhere to escape the excited crowds sur- rounding and following them.
