Those Charges Against Him—He Intends to Face the Music, and Make it Hot for Somebody- | At the last City Council meeting, City Marshal Snowden preferred charges ‘“against a certain police- man, name not given,” and the | matter was referied to the Commit- tee on Police for investigation. The morning papers announced the name of policeman Porter, 5as"be- ing the man, and briefly stated that the charges were that he had tried to induce a married woman to enter a house of ill-fame. Porter’s ver- sion of the affair, as we learn from | his attorneys, Smythe & Graves, is as follow The woman referred to, ran away from her husband, a telegraph operator out west, on account of his abusing her. He followed her to | Omahs, made up with her, and | lined with her ut the St. Charles hotel, until he man ged to get pos- session of her trunk. She had him arrested, regained her property, and finally obtained a home in a family of good repute. While she was at the St Charles, she became ac- quainted with Porter, who boarded there. He befriended her by loan- ing her $15 or $20. She one day asked him to get her a place in a maison de plaiser, and as | he had learned that she was not ex- actly treading in the paths of virtue, he thought nothing strange of it. Shortly afterwards, while he was doing duty on lower Douglas street, he told some of the syrens of this woman Oneof them wrote her a letter and gave it to Porter, request- ing him to hand it to the woman. who delivered it to the woman, and she showed it to the bearer. That is the sum and substance of the whole business. Porter s that he is innocent of any evil tention, and proposes to face the music, at the investigation, and make it red hot for the four or five married men, who raised enough money to send the woman to Chica- go yesterday, so as to get rid of her testimony. Her character has been ascertained to be rather question- able. Of course there are two sides to every story, and the investigation will probably bring out all the facts.
