Pop- pleton, Mr. Perrine, Mc- Emery, and others. | | Crocket Wilson, the eloquent auc- tioneer, enjoys the proud satisfac- | tion of having captured a burglar, and a colored one at that. To give a complete history of the | ludicrous affair, for such it really i was, we will state that the residence of Mr. Wilson is a two-story b ment building, located on Capitol | | Hill, on Dodge street, between Nine- teenth and Twentieth. On Satui- | day night last, at a late hour, it ap- pears that some one attempted to | enter the house, through the parlor | window, which projects over the basement. The servant girl heard | the noise, became frightened, and | ran up stairs, and gave the alarm, | stating that some one was trying to get into her room. The burglar, | however, anticipating that he had | been discovered, disappeared. | Monday might Mr Wilson went out | and lay for some time on_the top of | thelporeh, to keepasharplook-out for | the villian, whom he expected to return. However, as no midnight | ‘marauder put in an_appearance, he finally retired to bed. Yesterduy, just at the break u(‘ day, he was awakened by a noise in or about his sleeping room, in the upper story of hishouse. Springing from his bed, he alighted on the floor, examined the room without finding anyone, but upon crening | the clothes closet, around, his hand_ drop} wool, which proved to b to the head of a burglarior: ttached moke, Mr. Wilson jumped back overcome with astonishment, { immediately gatherix ing senses, be ex are you doing there, scoundret?”” but g his seatier- “What black med, you The colored man, justas Mr. Wil- son started for him, stepped out, and rushed down stairs, not waiting to answer the question. Mr. Wilson, who saw him “going—going”’ was determined, however, not to let huy be “gone.” He followed him in hot pursuit, and overtook him on the platform of the stairs one story be- low,and catching him by both arms threw him down. Mr. W. now yeil- of wood, with which to make some blackberry jam. The burglar, think- ing discretion the better part of valor, now agreed to give up. Mr. Witson sceordingly accompanied him down stairs, and when upon coming opposite the parlor door, the prisoner wrenched himself loose, window through which he had en- tered. The servant girl in the meantime had come out into the yard, ang (hus turned the course of the burglar into the street. Mr, Wilson came out of the front door, and although having on only his night shirt, did not hesitate to give chase, He followed the fugitive to a point opposite Senator Hitch- cock’s residence, where pick- ing up a heavy osk, he hurled it at the negro, with the intention of “rocking him to sleep, He hit him square in the back, but without any perceptible effect. The burglar stopped and coolly picking up _the stone, threw it back, and Mr. Wil- son, inorder to escape it, dodged and fell down. Wilson grabbed up the missile and renewed the chase, and overtook him again just oppo- site bfr. Emery’s residence. Hon. A. J. Poppleton’s hired man here re-inforced Mr. Wilson, and brought the burglar to a stand, but he would not surrender. Mr, Wilson here brought the stone once more into play, and knocked him down, and captured him, he taking held of one wrist, and Mr. Poppleton’s man hold of the other. The prisoner still resisted, when Mr. Poppleton’s man gave him a lively pounding witha couple of clubs, and Mr. Emery, who had come up in the | meantime, barefooted, bareheaded, | and excited, put in several blows that would have done ciolit thoroughbred Kicking b The excitement and i made, awoke the immediz ¢ a¢ig, borhood, and brought to the spot a stout others. On the way down, Mr, Emery varied the mo- notony of the, procession by occa- sionally stirring the prisoner up | with a lively kick, while Hon. A. J. Poppleton poked Lim frequently in the ribs with his cane. On arriving at the jail-yard, a consultation was held by all these old aettlers—who had, by this inci- dent, revived the reminiscences of the early days—whether or not to hang the black rascal at once, to one of the trees, or give hima show | by a legal trial.
