A practical joke was played by a Ninth street hotel runner upon a verdant Towa couple, who recently came over the riverto be married in Omaha. The runner first noticed and learning from their actions and | from some remarks which he over- heard, he concluded they were on matrimony bent. He accordingly | | determined to catch them for his hotel, and have the marriage cere- | mony performed there. He intro- { duced himself, and asked them if they were going to stop in Omahs, and upon their answering that they were,he advised them to “putup” at thehouse he represented, which he could recommend very highly, as | he boarded there himself. «“Well,” said the young man,“we wantto get married, and if we can | et a preacher to do_the job there | we'll stop at that house.” «Qh, that's easy enough done. ILam well acquainted with & min- ister, whom D'l go anc see about the matter.” That settled it. They wentto the | house, had a square meal, and took | astrolland a street car ride around the city. They retyrned for supper, and about seven o'clock, they sent for the friend—the runner—whom they had meton the tra, and a~ked him if he had procured the mi ter, No, he hadn’t; but would do so immediately, He then informed them that he must obt:in a mar- riage license for them, and that they must furnish him with their full names, nges, place of reddence, parents’ names, etc., and @ iive dol- lar bill to pay for the necessary doc- ument. The anxious couple com plied with the demand, little sus- vecting the swindling joke that was being played upon them. The runner then goes out and ob- taining a blank marriage certificate and a license, fills out the latter, and in a short time returns with a “bummer pa]” of his, who had for merly been a justice of the peace. He bad been informed of the role he was to play, and had acoording- Ly donned a seedy black suit and & whate cravat for the occasion. He wasushered into the presence of the matrimonial candidates in the par- lor by the runner, who introduced the “minister”” as the Rev. Mr. Smith. ‘The marriage ceremony Wwas per- formed by the “mumister” in the presence of several witnesses, all of whom were cognizant of the joke. After the couple were thus made one, the minister took the accus- tomed liberty of kissing the bride, and adding a blessing upon the newly married pair of long life and happiness. The minister then withdrew, after being rewarded with a ten dollar greenback, The runner and his “pal” met af- terwards and divided the spoils, eack taking $7,50. The “husband and wife" retired to their room, but before going to sleep, the bridegroom sent for the marriage license and the marriage certificate, both of whigh had been forgotten to be handed over by the “minister.” He was “sent for,” and in g few minutes the important documents were deljvered to the bridegroom, The next day the happy couple returned to thelr home near Glen- wood, evidently having enjoyed their wedding trip, and without ligving their pleasure marred by any suspicion that they had been swin- dled in more ways than one. The question now arises are they married? But what’s the odds as long they’re happy, and dont know the difference. Return of the Excursionists. George W. Gratton and family, Renry Wilhelm and family, Rev. Mr. Presson and wife, with many others, retyrned Friday from their trip to St, Paul, ang the lakes of Minnesota, highly pleased with their trip.
