Every attempt to build up the manufacturing industries of Omaha | deserves encouragement. We are gratified to learn that Mr. P. J. Quailey, one of our old citizens, has established a soap factory which soon promises to rival the older es- tablishments in this ecity. Mr. Quailey begins on a small scale, but he has the ability and determina- tjon to produce first-class goods at reasonable prices. He proposes ‘o furnish our denlers an article that will nct only compete with home and foreign productions, but can fairly lay claim to superiority and cheapness. Mr. Quailey has located his fac- tory near the powder house, in the building purchased by him from Theodore visher. He has every facility for manufacturing and pack- ing. We bespeak for him the lib- eral patronage of our citizens. Australisn Animals aad Birds for the Philadelphis Zoological Gardens. But two mem- bers of this menagerie have died on Among the collection were many rare birds of beaatiful plumage and sweet voices, and rare animals, both handsome and hideous, ol e Benson is Foiled in an Attempt to Jest His Family out of all their Property. Complaint was yesterday morning made at the Police Court against John Benson, who has been keep- inga saloon for some time past at the corner of Sixth and Pacific ars that he hasbeen ly shamefully for days, and had finslly made up his mind to gather all the money possible and then desert them. He had saved up about $1,800, which he had deposited in the Fist Nutinal Bank, and was daily increasing this sum by selling off his property and his family household furniture. His wife and daughter appeared against him at Court, and he finally comprom- jsed the matter by giving his wife $800 and the household furniture. The complaint was thereupon with- drawn upon his paying the costs. The Trados Assembly Repuaiates Joha- son & Dudley's Co-operative Ku Klux. It reminded one quite forcibly of the old Bible times, when the early Christians were persecuted and driven from one place to another, to see the lonely band who so stealthi- to the little night, to administer the rite of bap- | tism. It was after eight o’clock in the evening, and the quiet of Na- ture was broken only by the piping of the frogs, whé'were disturbed at The pale moon in the heavens above lent her light for the self-ordained priest of Joseph Smith’s persuasion to read | his ehapterand sing his hymn, and the with the assistance of two other devotees, the waiting dlsciple was plunged in true orthodox style. It was useless for him to flinch as he seemed likely to do, for the three were too many for him, and under he went, just once, but they held lum tili weli soaked; then they drew him out with his mouth full of the muddy water from the hole which nad not had time to settle since the assistants’ spades had scooped it out to enlarge it. Then with sonorous voice the self-made priest pronounced a blessing upon the convert, whose name was none other than Joseph, (whether Smith, too, or not, is not known,) and the little band dispersed, walking into the olty, leaving the disciple’s clothes to dry in the evening air; possibly his faith kept him warm, ‘who knows ? AN EYE WITNESS, Postal Notes. —Whea the law, ordering that no city under30,000 inhabitants should have the free delivery system, it was feared that Omaha being below the required standard, would have this great convenience taken away from it. But our citizens need have no fears on this account, as the in- terpretation of the law is, that those cities below 30,000, now having the free delivery system, shall not be deprived of it. The law applies only to the future establishment of the system in eities which have not yet got it. —Omaha in the distribution of mail matter by the free delivery system stands above thirty-one other citles, among which are St. Joe, Des Moines, Burlington, Wheeling, Sa- vannah, Dubuque, Charleston, Da- venport, Poughkeepsie, Leaven- worth, and Mobile. In the month of April there were delivered in Omaha, by six carriers, 41,251 mail letters; 4,619 drop letters; 20,500 pa- pers, ete.; und there were collected 28,430 letters. —RBy the Western Postal Record we notice head clerk Paul Vande- voort, ot the Union Pacific raflway mail service, has been ordered to Ogden.
