NORWICH BULLETIN, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1922 FINANCIAL AMD COMMERCIAL GAINS IN PRICES OF STOCES. New York, Nov, 2.—Substantial re- covery from the recent reaction extend- ing over a period of nearly three weeks took place In today's stock market, prices throughout the list being bid u» In spirited fashion with the active is- sues showing gains.of 1 to 6 points. The downward course of prices had been In the nature of a correction of an over-bought condition resulting from speculative excesses incidental to the declaration of stock dividends and ru- mors of the same. IndicAtions that the reaction had been overdone, just as the previous advance hgd been, were semn in the manner in which stocks rebound- ed today, buying embracing a broal list and being particularly active if in- dustrial shares which: had borne the brunt of the sHort selling. Short covering furnished the impetus for the early advance but as the main body of stocks swung upward there were Indications of new buying by vestment interests, founded on the con- stantly improving busiess situation. ‘This was ¥Yeflected in record car load- ings, increased automobile production in October over the previous month, be ter retail business as mirrored in the earnings statements of chain stores and further talk of extra diivdend disburse- ments. Good absorption took place throughout the list despite a rath:l heavy volume of realizing sales and ex- tensive liquidation on behalf of a bark- rupt brokerage Nouse. It is difficult to pick out any one group as being the most buoyant, but wome of the largest gains were record- ed in the oil, equipment, public utility and rafl shares. Buying in the equipment group was stimulated by announcement of addi- tional new and heavy orders for rails. care and locomotives, Baldwin and American Locomotives, American Pullman, General Electric and Railway Eteel Spring being pushed .up 3 to near- ly six points. Declaration. of an 18 per cent stock dividend Ly American Stael Foundries found reflection in a 3 point net gain in_that stock. Public Service of New Jersey led the advance in public utilities, gaining 5 1-4 points buying of .this' stock accompan¥- ing reports of .an dincrease from $6 to $8 In the dividend rate. Other strong spoty in this group were Consolidated Gas, Brooklyn Edison, Pacific Gas, ‘Co- lumbia Gas, Western Union ahd Adams and Amreican Express, all up to points, Mexican Petroleum was the outstand- Ing issue in the oil division, gainmg nearly 6 pointe. Other advances in this group included: Sfandard Oil of New Jersey, 2 3-4; General Asphalt, 2 1-8; the preferrad, 4 1-4; Pacific, 2 1-8 aad Standard Oil’ of California, 1 3-4. Bellet that the October earnings statements will make a much better showing than .those for September in- fuenced the buying of railroad shares, the rally in which was led by Reading, which registered a 2 point gain. Other Shares which recorded advances of 1 1-2 polnts or more included Union Paci- fic, New York Central, Lackawannu, Louisville, and shville, Rock Island and Chicaga and Northwestern. Steel shares were not as buoyant as some of the other standard groups but both United State§ Steel common and Bethlehem B improved 1 1-2 -points, while Republic, Vanadium and Crucihie lid slightly better, Reports of an in- creased - domestic demand foP copper 4were ‘responsible, in part, for gains of % point or more in American Emelting, Utah .and Chile. National Lead jumped + 8 1-2 points on announcement of an ‘n- crease in the price of that product, 25 The Great Money-Lender With a Heart We lend meney to honest- per- sons having ateady employment; loans for sums needed up to $300, 4 repayable in'six to fifteeq month- Ly installments, us arrangedl to suit convenience of each borrower; lesal rates charged on sum still due for time used; no charge un- less Joan made; deals confidential »and none will know you are bor- rowing? private offices; glad to ex- plain Beneficial Plan; courteous treatment; convenient and , safe place to borrow; equick service; new borrowers welcomed; hours, 9 to 5:20; Saturdays 9 to 1. HUTCHISON, in “GO _GET ’EM HUTCH” PATHE NEWS e e et EDUCATIONAL 'COMEDY CONTINUOUS SHOW SATURDAY, 1:30 TO 10:15 joount of scantiness of foreign stocks, wheat scored a fresh upturn in price today, the market then eased down, in- fluenced by selling from traders who ! contended that a setback was due. ' The close was unsettled, at the same as yes- terday’s finish to 3-8c lower, with De- cember 1.16 3-8 to 1.16 12 and May 1.13 7-8 to 114. Corn gained 1-8 to 3-¢c net, oats 1-8c@1-4 to 1-4@3-8, and pro- vislons 5c to 37c. Efforts to bring about a bearish re- action in the wheat market met with practically no success until the rise of value- shad carried May delivery to a new top record for the seasom, 111 3-3. At this stage profit-taking on the part of holders as well as speculative bear dealings more than counter-balanced the early gains. The fact that despite car shortage the total of primary re- ceipts today was much in excess of the aggregate a year ago counted to some extent gs 2 handicap to bulls, and so likewise" did further useful rams in tne winter crop belt. Gossip that Great Britain has yet to provide for half its November requir ments of wheat and, that other Euro- pean countries; have been getting les than enohgh to supply current needs at- tracted considerable notice, especially in 'view of a 10 per cent. cut in ocean freight rates. -The prevailing opinion later, however, appeared to be that ad- vances ‘here had sufficiently discounted bullish factors for the moment. Assertions that . country . elevatpr stocks of old corn had become nearly exhausted had bullish effect on corn and 6ats. Provisions were firmer with hog values and owing to a liberal da- crease shown in the amount of lard on hand here. . Chilcago Grain Market. Wheat— Dec. . THE DANCE OF THE SEASON!
