Her assailant escaped. ‘The young women's head was badly eut by a heavy leaden sach-weight used by the mysterious prowleh, who fled through & window by which he had en- tered. Her parents found her unconscious. Her life probably was saved, hospital surgeons sald, by her thick blond hair which she had done up in braids before retiring and_which broke tha foree of the blow. It was said she would re- cover. Mystery was added to the attack by the fallure of the prowler to take jew- eiry and other valuablex in plain view on a dresfer in the young woman's room. Miss Nichols, who attended Columbla unigersity last year, went to the dance with several of her college chums. The young man wio escorted her home after the party was questioned by the police and absolved of any knowledge of the crime. STORIES OF SERIOUS CONDITION OF UNREST IN INDIA London, Feb. 26.—The serious condi- tions of unrest in Indla are emphasized by correspondents of the London Times from various localities in India. They pay particular attention to the growing hostilities of the Sikhs. The eorrespondent aecompanying Prince of Wales, in a dispatch from Pa- tiala last Friday ys it is notorioug that the bitterness of the Sikhs has been largely formented by Indiars who have returned from America, “without whom, long before this, they might have been brought to see the unreasonableness of their antmosity.” He says that the Junjab, though ow- ing aileglance to Mohandas K. Gandhi, 1s the most greatly disturbed and most mutinously inclined district of the whole country. The extremists are show- ing rebelliousness under the restrictions of the resolutions of the national con- gress held at Bardoli, calling for a sus- pension of civil disobedience, and the Khillfatist mobs may at any moment become dangerous. the | The correspondent at Allahabad, tel. egraphing Friday, reports hostilities to the European as being manifest In towns and villages over large areas in the united provinces and in Bahar. He adds that scarcely a day passes without r ports of riots. A significant Agrarian movement fs progressing in the Calentta reglon, says the correspondent thers, .
