BAVINGS BANKS SUGGEST THRIFTY CHRISTMAS PLAN ‘This is going to be a thrifty Christ- mas instead of a wasteful one if the na- tion's savings banks have their way about it. They believe that a great deal of money is spent in usecless gifts every year, and it is their plan to turn a large share of that money into deposits. The savings institutions, through their Na- tional Association of Mutual Savings Benks, have originated a unique plan for giving accounts as Christmas gifts. “It simply means that we will open an account in any name and turn the passbook over to the giver,” said a Nor- wich bank official. “I can't think of a gift which would be more weicome ¢n Christmas morning than a savings bank book with a com- fortable deposit inside. That should start anybody to saving money. It will show that the giver has confidence in the person receiving the gift, that they want them to get ahead and have a real gosl. This is an excollent opportunity to start the ‘children in the way they should go. A few dollars deposited for them will be an incentive to deposit more, teaching thrift in the year when téaching is the most easlly absorbed. But the Christmas gift passbooi is not intended only for chidren. It is the something that never will wear out, grow old or lose its charm. And it must ever be a reminder of the giver.” The local banks expect to add a con- siderable number of new depositors through this Christmas plan and are up.
