Thousands of families are destitute and suffering * * * Enclosed herewith find check for $50 (our mite) with the re- quest that it be placed at the disposal of Mayor Greene, or any party proper to recleve it. = Yours respectfully, Fifty years ago this the citizens ot Norwich were shock the news of the great Chicago fire in which the west- ern metropolis was destroyed. A number of Norwich people were financially inte- rested in Chicago and several were en- gazed in busines sin that city. Realizing the great need of financial help for tha stricken clty the people ‘of Norwich voluntarily raised a sum of over $10,000 in cash immediately after the news of the big fire was recetved in Nor- wich and before the end of the week Mayor Greene had notified the Chicago mayor that he held the money subject to his order. The Norwleh fire department held their annual parade and it proved the largest parade of its kind every held In this city up to that time. Interesting’ extracts from the files of The Bdlletin of October, 1871, are as follows. Monday, Oct. 9. 1871—A eloudy morn- ing and streets like the Slough of Des- pond Saturday, wholly overthrew the feeble though cherished hope that the fates who rule the weather are inte- rested in the parade of fire departments, and the hearts of many waxed cold. But by noon the sun had plerced the clonds. By one o'clock the eky was ciear and everything was in a blaze of P Natty looking firemen, the very realization of the ideal, were hurrying throngh the street. The Wiliam M. Wil- liams Steam Fire Engine company, with the Third Regiment band let the line, followed by the Undines of Stenington with the Mystic band. The parade was the largest every made In this city. It ghowed the department larger in num- ber and better equipped than any previ- ous onme, while it also showed a degree of dizcipline and harmony among the com- panies highly flattering to Chief Engineer Delanoy and his asistants. The Norwich and New York Transpor- declared a dividend of & SEVIN Another large meeting of the mer- chants and clerks in favor ‘of the early closing movement was held in the Grand Army hall last evening. The committee made a favorable report, showing that though one or two firms are oppose to it, the majority of dealers and employes are ready to make the change of hours. Friday, Oct. 13, 1871—A large meeting of the citizens was held in Treadway hall vesterday afternoon for the purpose of aiding the sufferers of the Chicago fire. His honor, Mayor Greene was appointed cnairman and Theodore Raymond, secre- tary. The following resolution was adopted: Resolved that the chairman appoint a committee of 20 to canvass the town as speedily as posible, to securs voluntary contributions for the benefit of the sufferers of the fire in Chicago. At he suggestion of Moses Plerce a snbwcription paper wag prepared and $5,825 was contributed on the spot. The Hon. H. H. Starkweather thought the city would give at least $10,000 and considered it safe for the mayor to au- thorizé the mayor of Chicago to draw on the Norwich fund for $10,000. Saturday, Oct. 14, 1871—The Rev. Al- fred Free preaches his farewell sermon at the Greeneville Baptist church to- morrow. The anticipated sensation is to see the man fall off the Broadway church stee- Ple. The young were much displeased at being disappointed yesterday. Contributions for the Chicago fund to- tal $10,008.70. His Honor Mayor Greene sent the following telegram last evening: Hon. R. B. Mason, Mayor of Chicago: Norwich grieves at her sister’s calamity.
