LONG DROUGHT MADE SALMON FISHING POOREST IN YEARS Archibald Mitchell of Brosdway has returned from a month and a half in his annual saimon fishing on the Ristigouche river, New Brunswick, which this year turned out to be the poorest season in the memory of the oldest inhabitant on the river. The protacted drought was the reason, There was only a small snowfall last winter and a heavy rain in May washed away the snow and created a freshet Since then there has been little rain and the pools in many places became too low for fish. Miles of river were put out of commission for fghing purposes be- cause of low water. The Matapedia riv- er, which is a tributary to the Ristigou- che, was so low that the fins of the.sal- mon were out of water as the fish made their way up the river to the spawning beds ‘and guardians were stationed along the banks’ to prevent tne salmon from being gaffed by peachers. The Risitigouche finally became so low that 2 horse attached to a buggy was seen to ford the river in front of the fishing lodge one dav. Mr. Mitchell fished only from June 1 to June 183 and then qmit because of the peor condiffons. He caught 11 salmen whose weights fellow 1%, 22, 31, 8, 11, 82, 27, 9, 9, 11, 9. His 32 pounder was the largest salmon caught at his camp. E. A. Olds of New York and Thomas Hunter of Detroit were wi™h him and they and others at the ledge kept on fishing up to the time Mr. Mitchell left for home. In that time 60 fish had been caught. ——— COMMISSION WAS ISSUED 99 JITNEY CERTIFICATES ‘The public utilities commission has now issmed certificates for the operat- tion of jitneys to ninety-nine individuals or companies that wiil operate about 200 cars. There are but iwo or three cases Where certifieates have been granted but not issued, so that it is now possible to accurately estimate the number of fit- neys that will be legally in use at the end of the week. Tuesday or Wednesday the motor ve- hivle department will be ready to issue the new public service number plates, including jitney plates and the “O” plates for public service vehicles which are not jitneys, and the printed forms for registration. As soon as the department is pre- pared te issue the new plates a no- tice will be sent to each of the 1,200 helders of public service motor vehicle licenses througheut the state informing them that a transfer must be made, on or before a certain date, to jthe new form of plates. These nouez- will be sent by registered mail so that no ore ean claim he did not know of the new law. The present public service plates are te be called in and the “J” or “O" plates issued in exchange.
