Inguiry was imade to Néwton D. Baker, secre- tary. of war, hy. the Stars and Stripes, the ex-serviee men's_paper,.published by veterans for veterans. The secretary of war replied that uniforms may be worn under the provisions of act of congress, and in addition says it seems to him entirely appropriate that the day should be observed in this man- ner. Secratary Baker's letter to the Stars and, Stripes follows: Dear Sir: ‘In response to your in- quiry relative ‘to the aproval of ‘the war Qepartment for exservice men to wear their uniforms on Commemoration Day, 1 beg leave to say that nnder the act of Congress approved Feb. 28, 1919, any person who ‘served in the United States army during the present war may wear the umform after discharge, pro- vided that it shall include. some dis- tinctive mark to be prescribed by the secretary of war. 'The red chevron has boen prescribed to be worn by discharg- of duties performed ‘n the service of their country. There . therefore, no sort of tmpediment to thé project you propose, and it seems to me entirely appropriate that. Cominemoration Day, already set aside to 2 similar use, should be ob- served In this manner as an.additional tribute of respect and reverence for the sacrifices and services which the army made 1 the ‘world war.
