Philadelphia, Aug. 13.—Grace Di- rect, the speedy daughter of Walter Direct, won a hollow victory in .the $5,000 stake for 2.06 pacers, the fea- ture of the opening day of the third | annual Grand Circuit meeting at the Imont Driving club's track at Nar- | th today. The race had only three starters and wag decided in straight heats. Grace Loéct won as she pleased, neither Frank Dewey nor Ed- ward P. being able to push' the Ten- nessee mare at any_stage of the jour- ner when Driver Sturgeon let ®o ef ber head. The races were decided on the three heat plan, every heat a race and the money was well split up. The 2.13 pace went four heats and furnished the best contest of the day. Ed Geers' Homefast, driven by Ben Walker, won the opening heat. Prince Pepper the second and Harper . the third. The three heat winners met in the fourth heat, which Harper won pasily in 2.13 1-2. - : The 2.08 trot for the A. B. Mathews cup and a purse of 31,000 furnished good racing. Oscar Watts took the first heat from Hollyrood Kate, which got off to a bad start, but Dodge’ mare easily cutclassed the field and captured the next two.in clese heats. The othier events were for Philadel- es only. : ,hfieho-r:n,per Wwas fair and the track in good shape but not fast. Unlike the previons day, the opén- dently as a direct ~onsequence of pressure from the short interest. which ceitered mainly in steels and the shares af related groupg. Thereafter the list rallied and re- acted alternately, equipments. oils and some of the food issues, as well as var- ious ‘unimportant #pecjalties / helping to stabilize the market. Rails, tobac- res and sund unclassified stock moved contrarily, but the tone at the tlose was firm io strong, Baldwin Lo- comotive leading at a gain of almost i points. There were no essential ‘charge in ‘undamental conditions touching .upon the stock market, call money remain- nz comparatively easv, despite mis- ziving created by the heavy withdraw- 2i of federal deposits, The industrial situation was more favorable to the extent that the rail-- *oad shopmen’s strike manifested signs of carly settlement in the east and prospects of a local® traction walkout were regarded as more remote. Additional eapital underwritings were reported. including the formation | of a_syndicate for the sale of the new U. S. Rubber common _stock. Rumors dealing with new foreign oans. with intimations of a French municipal offering, were said to be premature. Incidentally, exchange on Paris was slightly firmer, rates to oth- ar_important centers also improving. Bon were more steady than the stock list. althouzh Liberty issues rielded slightly and internationals were rregular. Total sales, par value, were $11,275.000. Old U.
