GOOD PRACTICE GOLF’ AT MAYFIELD CLUB Cleveland, Ohio, July 22.—Excellent £olf was played today in practice over the six thousand two hundred and six- ty yards course of the Mayfield Coun- try club by the 140 entrants for the western golf . championship. Chief honors went to Gil Nichols of New York, who scored a par 70. “Joe Nicholl, the Dayton, Ohio, pro- fessional - scored a freak one on the 200 yard thirteenth hole.” Driving on a high parapet tee to a narrow gulch green surrounded by yawning bunkers, the veteran dropped a beautiful iron shot just short of the 4 1-4 inch cup and the ball trickled in. Another who equalled par was Em- mett French of York, Pa. es ‘today in the tennis singles tour- nament for the Longwood Bowl and in the doubles for the New England sec- tional championship. As a result only ten players appeared on the courts and not a match was finished. Colonials Unable to Secure Grounds. When the electric starting system refuses to start and the crank has been left in the garage, the motorist still has methods of getting the car going. The best way, perhaps. is to jack up one of the rear wheels and turn it by hand, with the clutch en- gaged and high gear shifted in. The spark should be retarded and only a small throttle opening allowed. Be- fore removing the jack, the - gears should be shifted to neutral again. If you open the relief valves to look for a cylinder missing explosions and fail to see a flame, do not condemn that cylinder. Open the throttle and sive it enough gas to fire. When the throttle is closed and the relief valve open, so much the egine sucks in To test a wheel for loose bearings shown in'this way, try lifting the hub to see if there is play in that direc- tion.
