» JUNE The police of Westerly have been seeking Owen Riley for more than six months. He was wanted to answer to he charge of committing a violent as- | sanlt upon John (Dad) Lynch, on the Sth of December, 1918, It was re- ported at the time of the assault that | Riley, aceompanied by a New London | thug,” were taken by Chris Ferraro in his automobile to the farm where Lynch was employed. Riley and the London man beat up Lynch very severely, and, so it is claimed, Ferraro, witnessed the assault and did not heed the appeal of Lynch to take him to a doctor for treatment. It nlsn claimed that Ferraro made no to stop the assault upon and farther that he aided the two men to get beyond the jurisdiction of the Westerly police. Court Rentley, whose death was claimed by some people to be due to injuries re- ceived by being assaulted just outside the Elm cottage at Narragansett Pier, two months ago. Mr. Bentley has been dead three weeks, Dr. M. H. Scanlon would not affirm or deny that an au- topsy had been held, Friday morning, though it would be up to him to form the same as medical exam- iner. Tt is positively known, however, th there was an autopsy, and that Dr. Michael H. Scanlon, Dr. John L. May, Dr. Frank I. Paine of Westerly, and_Drs. Shattuck, Sawyer and Smith of Providence, Assistant _ Attorney General Sisson anfl a Mr. Farrell, a lawyer and stenographer, also of Prov- idence, were at the cemetery. Presum- ing that the autopsy was performed, report of same, with findings, will be made direct to Attorney General Rice, Coroner Kingsley has just conclud- ed an inquest into the death of Mr. Bentley and has announced that his fiindings will not be filed for several weeks with _the clerk of the superior court for Washington count: Per- him. Then there was a fight. He said he @id mot go to the Brown Bridge road to get “Dad” but when he saw “Dad” he determined to even matters up. Riley declared he was drunk and that he Qid not ask his friend to help him out in the fight. After the as- sault he told Ferraro to drive on to ston. Lynch ran up the road so he s not helpless. Riley said he had pleaded guilty and hoped he would not be given Jjail sentence, but rather a fine that he could pay and then get back to his work. He said he came to Westerly to give himself up as he did not want the warrant over his head. Solicitor Agard stated that the facts did not substantiate the statement that Riley came to town to surrender to the police.
