And then there are others who, being naturally su- perstitious, are all the time looking for signs where there aren't any—and sometimes finding them! The disappointing thing about the signs which we swear by is t while they hold good three times out of four, or perhaps nine times out of ten ,they fall utterly the fourth or tenth time. Which sets some of us guessing and some to wondering and some to a serfous attempt to find out the why and wherefore of them. Now 'a sign is just a symptom. It isn't the weather any more than a symptom is the disease. The disease is the cause of the symptom; the weather, actual or prospective, is the cauge of the sign. If the doctor knows the why of the symptom he can usus Iy get a straight line on the real d ease. If the farmer knows the why of his weather signs, he might get a straighter line than now on the weather. In other words, why shouldn’t the ute knowing for guess- favorite weather signs? that oldest ‘and best known all hat, Take rhyme: “Evening red and morning gray Will speed the traveller on his way; But evening gray and morning red. Will bring down rain on the pilgrim's head.” Now no one in his sober senses sup- poses that God squirts a little extra red dye on {0 the morning sky just as a warning to the early farmer that it is likely to rain _that day. It is the impending rain which causes that ex- tra redness. But how, and why? Let's stop guessing and try to find out. There's the rainbow. Its bright col- ors are made simply by the sunshine falling obliquely on the raindrops of retreating shower and being by hem refracted, according to a well- known law of light, so as to separats ihe rays into their original colors. Being higher, the rising s rays strike it earlier and, some. after the fashion of rainbow- g, are more or less refracted into . Also Wwe know that the upper - is colder than the lower air and is the condensation of mos= pheric vapor by this cold which pro- duces rain. There you have it; an at- mosphere overcharged with moisture that moisture lifted higher than nor- mal by the unusually light air; the very conditions of rain indicated be- fore your eyes, The redness of the morning sky isn't " met out by special order for : it is just a symp- ton the condition of the air Having observed the svmptom, it is up to the practitioner of agriculture to anose the probable disturbance it indicates, Then there's When the s a ou another old sign: lows fly low, look out for rain.” That's one of my particular vorites. But why should the swal lows know when it is going to rain? The answer is that they don't. Th don't_know anything about it are flying after bugs to eat, snapping them up on the wing. When the a mospheric pressure is such as to in- duct precipitation the bugs which the i ter fiy low, close to the surface of the ground, and the swal- lows chase ‘em there where they hap- pen to be. That's all there is to it Then there's the famous drought sign. When the sun rises like a dull red ball, shining dimly through uni L smoky haze, we look for a dr, time. Why? Well, T frankly | fess T don't know. Do you? But the fact that I don't know and that per- haps you don't, either, is no evidence that there isn't a reason for it—if we only out. When we do find it out, it will prove to be, like all others, a simply natural result of the workings of nat- ural law. There won't be anything mysterious about it, once we know the why and wherefore. There are other “signs” which have no explanation becaus: they are really neither signs nor symptoms, but just vagaries of cre- dulity or ignorance. 1 have one neighbor who clings and always will cling to an absurd idea that “As many fogs as there are in February, so many frosts there will be in May” T have others whe actual- ly believe that the last three-days of ny given.month are weather indica- tors for the succeeding month. Re- membering _that our division of the vyear into months is purely an arbi- irary one, made solely for convenience in reckoning dates, and that it is just a human makeshift invention, what possible basis in reason can be found for supposing that Nature goes out of her way to humor our almanacs? Year afier year my neighbor chalks down on his ‘barn_door the dates of February fogs. When a May frost chances to coincide with one of them, he boasts thereof with much satisfac- tion.
