We are on the road now with a new chow, Echoes from Broadway. Last| Thursday night we showed to the 17th F. A. at the fort atop the hill at Ehren-} heritstein. This is one of the Rhine- land forts to be demolished, according to Marshal Foel. It is a most formid- able looking place, approached oniy by a long, steep, winding road, on both sides of which is a high wall from one! to five feet thick built of solid rock and ' concrete. Every few hundred vards one enters a long tunnel and crosses a' drawbridge, under which is a deep: moat. There are all sorts of tunnels! and secret passageways in the iorL The roofs of most of the buildings are. covered with three or four feet of earth! and grass, vines, etc., which make a fine camoufiage against aerial observa-’ tion, We were told that the fort could easily accommodate 50.000 men, and I don't doubt it, as the interior runs away inte the hill. On the very top of. the fort there is a large drill grounds. and the view from there is perfectly wonderful. The city of Coblenz is just across the river; the buildings look like toy houses and the people like ams running around in search of food. Some of the men from this ba.tlallont are at the fort taking a three months’: course in automobile maintenance and construction. 'Last Tuesday evening : we showed for the Fifth marines at Schloss Monrepos, one or two com- panies being stationed there. The town belonged to the Krupps and contains a fine castle which is said to be 1,800 years old. The marines are billited a large building which was used a hunting lodge. I talked to him and he sprang from Patton’s shoulder to mine and began licking me on the nose and all over my face, whining like a puppy He_cer- tainly remembered me all right. A few days later he either broke his chain and got away or else someone stole; and killed him. We have never seen him since, but he is really better off, if he is free.
