The shaft louse of chickens also has been found on tur- keys, but probably does not breed on that host. The other two species seem to be native to the turkey, prob- ably existing on this fowl in the, wild state. The large turkey louse prob- ably is most abundant. HOW COW TESTING PAYS There were 353, cow-testing associ- ations operating in the United States July 1, 1918. These associations have an aggregate membership of 9,778 farmers, owning 168,348 cows. The cow-testing association originated in Denmark in 1895, and the first of the organizations in this country was formed in Michigan in 1906. Because of the value of the associations to the dairy industry of the country the United States Department of Agricul- imulating interest in them assisting farmers in their or- ganization.
