The Merchants ciation of New York city has adonted the slogan “New York Jobs for New York Men.” It may be looked upon at first con- sideration as a selfish attitude to take toward the returning soldiers =allore, for it is in regard that it applies, much thousht to realize that very wise course to pursue. The effort is being made there as elsewherc throughout the country to give emyloyment to the men who are being mustered out of the service. SChis means that the return to their <ld jobs is being urged and if they, for uny reason, are not open or desira- ble the purpose is to see that the men ure vlaced as advantageousiy and as wulckly as possible. New York is the port where a large proportion of the 1en are being landed and in adjacent «amps they are being disch to them it is covenant | |1 Angele; in | and | but it doesn’t require | the service. It is quite natural that many should seek to get weork and remain in the metropolis. To give these men employment there would mean that the opportunities of the New York men who are returning would be just that much lessened -and that the communities throughout the country where help might be needed and from which such men were called would be badly handicapped. New York’s purpose is to take care cf its own men and by placing them upon the preferred list it insures the distribution of the returning soldiers throughout the country which might be interfered with to a greater or less degree if it was not done, that while it has taken action for what raight scem a selfish motive it is in reallity rendering a big service to the rest of the country particularly the sections where help is being sought.
