Teleshone 38-3 Norwich, Conn. 91 Main Street Forest Hills, N. Y, Aug. 30.—R. Lindley Murray, known as the Cali- fornia meteor, playing from Niagara Falls, and T. W. Tilden, Jr, of Phil- adelphia, won their way into the semi- final round of the thirty-seventh an- nual tennis singles championship on the courts of the West Side cluv here today. Murray defeated Nathaniel W. Niles, of Boston, three out of four sets, ‘at 7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. Tilden re- sumed the match with Walter Merrill Hall of New York, which was inter- rupted yesterday with the. score two sets to one and an odd game in the New Yorker's favor. The towering Philadelphian, however, quickly swept away Hall's iead and won the fourth and fifth sets; the complete, score be- ing 3-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 The only other matches of the day brought about the defeat of Beals C. Wright in the last play of the fifth rouad. The veteran internationalist went down in a five set match before the Japanese sar, lchiya Kumagae, $-10, 6-3, 3-6, 691, 6-2. The Murray-Niles contest was by far the most thrilling of the day’s play and held the largest sallery of the week enthralled throughout the two hours necessary to Gevelop the Victor. Perfect weather conditions prevailed when the eastern and west- ern coast racquet experts took the court, the temperature being high but the atmosphere dry and with an ab- sence of wind which has bothered the players on preceding days. Murray startea with dashing attacks upon the net but was repeatedly pass- ed both at the net and as he sprintad to the barrier. It was omly after summoning his last ounce of spead and" power that he was able to take a deuce set from the Bostonian. e won_easier in the second bat Niles reached the height of his ganiz in the third, his returns in many cases be- ing unplayable. Murray coatributed many errors in his efforts to make re- turns, the third set going to the for- mer Harvard star at 6 The fourth and deciding set was the most brilliant of the match. Niles haf | his strokes timed to_perfectioa and matches being won in straight sets. These junior contenders will be given a grandstand court early to: morrow upon which to fight out championship in their divisica. THE HARTFORD MEETING. " Hartford, Conn., August 30.—The thirty-third renewal of the Charter Oak Purse will be trotted next Thursday on the fourth day of the Grand Cir- cuit meeting which- will be held- over Charter Oak Park in conmection with the Connecticut Fair. Since this event was established in 1883 it has been won by such great horses as Director, Harry Wilkes, Prince.Regent, Lord Vincent, Hamberg Belle, The Harves- ter, Peter Scott, and St. Frisco. Geers has _won four of them and it looks as thbugh he has a chance to win it again with June Red, as she has been making a sweep all the way down the line. There are, however, . sixteen other horses eligible to stort, the list including Chilcott, The Royal Knight and Blanche Carter. In the race in which ‘he defeated Heir Reaper at Col- | umbus, Chilcott trotted faster _than June Red has shown in any of her winning performance. ~ Still ‘notwith- standing that fact Geers defeated him with the Red Medium mare at Pough- keepsie last week. Blanche Carter is also a very fast mare although at times unsteady while it also looks as if Ben Walker would make a champion out of The Royal Knight. He has won with him right along and while Lock- spur grabbed a heat from him at Poughkeepsie and Lotto Watts gather- cd in another at Readville, the “stormy petrel” of the turf landed the events. The entries show that the program has been arranged so that there will be a special event on the card each afternoon. On Labor Day the thou- sands who flock to the fair will have an opportunity to sce St. Frisco and Mabel Trask in_their third battle at Hartford while Lu Princeton has also been added to the field and may de- feat the both of them as well as Heir Reaper. A three year old trot will ve sandwiched_with this event and with mr:!u‘u nocn. wmmwmn f running off the postponed events uweuuthmvnthqresnlum- gramme. MISS DETROIT Iill. WINS HEAT FOR CHALLENGE CUP Detroit, Mich, Aug. 30.—Miss De- troit IIL. of the Detroit Yacht club, won the first thirty-mile heat for the gold challenge cup on the ~Detroit River course today averaging 52.1 miles-an_hour. ‘“Gar” Wood, piloting the boat, crossed the line third at the start, but ook the lead immediately afterward and never was headed. In the first lap Miss Detroit IIL al- most equalled the world’s_record for a five ‘mile lap made at Minneapolis last year by Miss Detroit IL, averag- ing 59.43 miles an hour. = Because Wood did not have to drive hard to lead, he missed the record, doing the course at an average of 59 miles an hour flat. Miss ‘Minneapolis, representing the Minneapolis Boat club, finished sacond averaging 43.66 miles an hour and showing 49.6 miles an nour in her first lap. ALL-NORWICH TEAM TAKES FIELD AGA|N Sunday afternoon the All-Norwich team will cross bats with the New London Independents on the Falls diamond. As usual the local boys present a formidable lineup on paper. Whether or not they have benefited by their lay off remains to be seen. The one . consolation is they can't have gone back much. Callahan has the stars of the other team in his lineup jand 7at least McIntyre and Eddie Mur- ray of the newcomers are good men. It is not certain that Murray will play. He is at his home here, after completing his course at the avi- ation school at Princeton. He would materially strengthen what even with out him appears to be a strong bunch of ball players. The New London team has been going good this year. They played here early in the season and the locals just managed to nose out in the eighth inning. Considerable of their strength is concentrated in their battery, Ballastini and Coyle. The complete local lineup is Mclntyre c, Bush, Brooks or Farrell p, W.
