Antonio Turisi, one of the accused ' men, wag on the stand in his own de- fense in the trial of the gang of Ital- jans who robhed Backus gerage in 4| Mystic last November, in the superior court in New London on Friday morn- ing. Turisi, who went on the stand late Thursday afternoon, denied all knowledze of the robbery and that fl.le tires he bought were stolen. In his direct examination Thursday - afternoon Turisi stated that Madonia, another of the accused men, who te: tified for the state Thursday, did not stay at his home in Westerly when he came to New London from New York, and that he had never seen Madonia before the night he bought the tires rom him. # Under cross examination by suu Attorney Hull Friday morning the railroad bridge in Westerly and that he directed them to his brother: lin-law’s farm in Westerly. He denied | having covered the tires over with hay that night, but admitted that he and Tuscano did cover them over with hay | the following day, “to keep them from freezing and keep them warm.” Turisi denied having refused ta identify his cousin, Tony Longo, an- other acqused as a member of the party from whom he bought the tires in the county jail in New London. H¢ also denied having sent a money ordet for $80 to Madonia. State Attorney i Hull asked him if there was an An. tonid Turisi in Westerly ang the wit: ness said there was.
