Just compiled under the urve; = nt of the Interior, show that 1 of patural gas commer- in the United States in § was r than that so utilized m. other year \in the history of -gas industry. The volume to 758,170,263~ feot. constitutes a now reC- ord, exceeding by nearly 125 billion cubic feet, or 20 per cent., the former record, established in 1915. The average price of this gas at the point of consumption was 15.96 cents a thousand cubic feet and its total market value was $120,227,468, a loss of 0.I6 cent in unit but a gain of $18,915,087, or 18.6 per cent, in to- tal value compared with 1915. Credit for increased production of natural gas in 1916 belongs in the or- cer given to West Virginia, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, California, Louistana, Kansas, Texas, and Arkansas, which together produced 132 billion custc feet more gas in 1916 than in 1915. Significant increases, important local- ly, but unimportant as affecting the production of the entire country, are credited to Illinois, New York, and Montana. “In only two states was there a sigpificant decrease. in the production of natural gas in 1916. The rapid exhaustion of the prolifie Cleve- resulted in a loss of some 9.6 billion cubic feet in the total volume pro- duced in Ohio, and the steady de- ciine of the c!d flelds in Indiana caused a falling off of 0.6 billion cu- bic feet in the output of this stats The general increase in the produc- tion of natural gas in the United States in 1916 is attributed principally to an enormeus expansion of the case ing head gasoline industry in all na- tural-gas producing states and to a land field, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, greatly augumented ‘demand for na- tural gas as fuel by industries en- gaged in the manufacture of muni- tions of war. The influence of this demand is shown in the increase in the volume of gas distributed to in- dustrigl consun:ers d in the in- crease in the value of gas consummed, its effect being sufficient to lower the average priee per thousand cuble feet of all gag sold in 1916, 1 per cent. as cumpared with 1915. The principal beneficaries of increased production of natural the gas were, in the order named, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kansas, West Virginia, California, and Louisiana, wkich together consumed gome 104 billion cubic feet more gas in 1916 than in 1915. Of the total volume of natural gas produced and consumed in 1916, it is éstimated that 235,380,764,000 cubic feet, or 31 per cent. was distributed to 2262494 domestic consurvess at an average price of 28.63 cents a thous- and cubie feet, and that the remain- = ing 69 per cent, or 517,789,489,000 cu- bic feet was distributed to 18,278 in- dustrial consumers at an average price of 10.21 cents a thousand: Compar- ed with 1915 these data show gain of § per cent in volume ,of 8 per cent in r.unt:bler of conmmm:x;,fl and of 1 My cent in average w ice of gas sup- plied for domestic yse, and 3 gain ?nf of consumers of gag supplied for in- dustrial use, The proportior of natural gas sup- plied to industrial consuers in 1914 ‘was 4 per cent larger than in 1915,
