P. Rev. J. H. Newland, pastor of Trin- ity Methodist Episcopal chuhch, gave a most fitting_address Sunday after- noon at the Sheltering Arms. The text chosen was, When ye pray say; Our Father. I am glad that I can sometimes think in simple ways about God, he said, as walking with a plow- boy, as wandering with us in the Wwoods, as being with our dear, sick ones, close to the needy, smoothing the pillow of the weary. God is like our earthly father because He pro- vides and makes everything beautiful for us. God sweetens the hard things. He is like our earthly father in that He puts joy into everything in this world. He puts laughter into the world, it is everywhere in the ele- ments about us. God wants good feel- ing and cheer among His children. He is like our earthly father in His patient persistance. He keeps calling when we wander away. We are so slow in grasping opportunities, we are siow when called to great endeavor, God keeps calling again and again, because He js our Father. He calls to better things. Sometimes I fancy I hear God say to those who are over- working, to a bci who has a hard time, “Be patient, it will be easier by and \by!” Sometimes He says, “You g0 to sleep, stop worrying! I will take care of the world” In loving care, with tenderness unspeakable, God leads us on. God owns His children and_their work. He writes a_man’s 500d_character on his face. God as our Father helps us over the hard places. When we do good work for Him we have His approval. He takes hold when we let go, and helps with His own strength for the end of the task. Christ says, “Our Father.” keep- ing us together in a close family rela- tion. Around His throne He will ga- ther us. Jesus said, When ye pray say, Our Father. Mrs. William Crowe, Jr.. was direc- tor of the girl®’ choir and played the accompaniments. _The service opened with the hymn, When Peace Like a River. The authems, Just For Today, and Sun of My Soul Thou Savior Dear, were given with rare sweetness of ex- pression and proved a most helpful part of the service. Spoke in New York Church. Rev. Francis Rose, who is taking a course of study at Columbia univer- sity, New York, was invited recently to 'address a men’s meeting at the Baptist church on Fifth avenue, of which Rockefeller is a member. After the address Mr. Rose was invited by those present, including Mr. Rocke- feller, to bring his slides and give the llustrated address on the Philippines. This Thanksgiving will be a notable one at Mr. Rose's father’s on Wauwe- cus Hill as four generations will be present, and Rev. and Mrs. Francis Rose will come from Ney York for the day. Forty-eight Hours Shore Leave. During the past week John Fields had a furlough of 48 hours from his ship in Philadelphia, and spent the time at his home on Elm avenue. Items of Interest. School children find chances Satur- days to earn ten cents a bushel husk- ng corn for the farmers. Miss N. J. Campbell, who has been residing on Washington street, is now located on Lincoln avenue. This does not mean that there is any lack of that interest that springs from contrasting character, but merely that the play 50 truly human that it does not po: tray any one being so altogether bad that the inner light has never a o to shine. “The Manx-Man” is to be a picture that is so far ahead of the usual run of films that they are lost in the dust, and its run of a month at the Criterion theatre made a veritable sensation in New York in the realms of the screen drama. The last chapter of “The Fatal Ring" will also be shown and the latest war news in the Hearst-Pathe Weekly completes the bill. For the first half of this week the Davis will offer an excellent pro- gramme of Keith standard vaudeville acts and super feature plays. The headline attraction is Chas. F. Sea- mon, astoundingly tall and thin, uni- versally known as one “Narrow Fel- lor.” As a matter of fact, no title could be more descriptive, for Seamon by all odds the thinnest and most cthereal personage any one could con- ceive of. As one reviewer wrote re- cently, a bottle of olives would make him 100k like a knotted thread. To add to his grotesque appearance, Sea- mon dresses like a horse with inter- ferers on the knees. Charlie extracts music from a variety of unfamiliar instruments. A running fire of com- #dy talk accompanied by a number of changes makes his freak music and bandy legs shrieks of mirth.
