VWALKED 1,460 MILES. Long H'ke of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Norris of Portland, Who Are Visiting in Norwich. Mr, and_Mrs. John J. Norris_and daughter, June Margaret, from Port- land, Ove, are visiting Mr. Norris' mother, Mrs. John W. Norris, of 221 Broad street, Norwich. It is an inter- esting fact that from June, 1915, up to September of the following year Mr. and Mrs. Norris walked over 1,400 miles from Po-tland, Ore., to Salt Lake City, in the hope of benefitting theif little daughter's heaith. Sometimes the fam- ily_wourl cover 35 miles in a day. The little girl, who is now 9 years old, is in excellent health. She is clever as an elocutionist and has re- cited for charity jn many cities along their route. , CANNING DEMONSTRATION. One Wili Be Held This Afternoon at the Y. M. C. A. Hall. Posters In various store windows about the city call attention to a can- ning demonstration to be held this af- rernoon :n the Y. M. C. A. hall. This_demonstration is planned to eet thy special demands of the fall eason. The canning of peaches, making cf peach war jam &nd the va- rious ways of preserving and canning peaches will be shown. Infjrmation as to saltinz down vegetables as well as fermenting and salting will be given. The stering of winter vegetables in the cellar will be taken up, with infor- mation_as to the storing in sand of some of them. Advice as to both fresh and canned vegetable storing will be included Methods of drying frult ard vegeta- bles will be spoken of and the ueces- sary equipment illustrated. This uemonstration will meet a real demand in the community and it is hoped that every housewife will make an_effor: to attend. If there is demand for it, a later demonstration will be given on bread. The making of bread from rye, corn, tuckwheat. entire wheat, graham, etc., will be given. Also the making of cereal breads from oats, oatmeal, hom- iny and samp to replace wheat.
