In the Rhode Tsland Red Class, the Connecticut pen from Westport eased up just a little last week and was promptly passed by & Vermont pen from St. Albans. The same thing hap- pened in the Leghorn group; the New Yo pen from New Paltz slowed only tie, but was at once supplanted s a Comnecticut pen from Suffleld. The management of the contest has added one more delicacy to the green food menu for the hens. In previous vears, clover, rape and swiss chard have been used during the summer and mangles or half sugar beets in winter. In order to provide still more variety and to make sure of a supply of succulent food in the autumn before the beets are harvested, 2,000 cab- bage plants have been put out which is hoped will produce two good ads of cabbage for each hen. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hamtston of Stafford Springs spent Fourth of July with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Butler of Lafayette street. ~ Sheltering Arms Celebration. The Fourth of July was celebrated at the Sheltering Arms by a picnic party on the lawn. A pleasant fea- ture was the fact that every member of the household was able to be pres- ent. Miss Isabel Church held the seat of honor as she also celebrated her birthday. She was well remembered with candy and cards. A patriotic programme was successfully ~carried out. Patriotic and National airs were played by a victrola loaned by the Plaut-Cadden company. Miss Alice Bennett operated the victrola. The Declaration of Independence was read by Mrs. Henry T. Arnold and Miss Bessie Beckwith read the selection, The Old Bellman. A delicious picnic ‘supper was served supplemented with jce cream and cake. _The refresh- ments were furflished by Miss Sara L. Huntington following the custom of her sister. Mrs. George C. Ripley furnished strawberries for the feast. The matron, Mrs. Ellis, had general charge.
