All you need do, when one of them begins his lugnbrious wail about his own ills, is to break in at the first pause with an equally long and detailed narration of how you felt that time when you had a bilious fever. Give the grunter a chance to hear with his own ears the sort of stuff he puts forth from his own mouth. It won't be long before he'll edge away from you as far as he can. Hell make it perfectly clear that he doesn’t epjoy that style of conversation—except when he's mak- ing it himself and about himself. I don’t kmow whether the grunting habit conld properly be classed as a crime or a sin. It certainly is a vice, and one for which there is very small excuse. Nine times out of ten, the mishaps or misfortunes or hurts against which the grunter grunts are merely such mishaps or misfortunes or hurts as every one else undergoes. They are the common lot, the univer- sal heritage, unescapable inflictions no more calling for special mention than the sunrise or the ebb tide. In the first place, grunting or whim.- pering or whining over such occur- rences or conditions does no good. In neither remedies the evil nor allevi- ates it. Tt neither wards off suffering nor makes inevitable suffering any ecaster to bear. —Bear in mind that there’s a world- wide differenco between mere grunting for the sake of the grunt and a rea- sonable appeal to such actual assist- ance or relief as others can afford. One would be actually heartless who should refuse to lend assistance to re. lieve another, when such assistance was in his power and offered any rea- sonable chance of being effective. The kind of grunting T am considerinz is not a call for practical help, but a maudlin whimpering. not intehded as a call for help but solely to draw at- tention to the grunter’s discomfort. Tt does no %00d to any one, is mot in- tended to do good to anv ome, and therefore is without any excuse along that line. In the second place, this habit of grunting, which does the grunter no possible good, on the other hand act- vally increases his own discomfort. Dwelling on an ill always acgravates the Il beyond its natural degree. In the case of small mattors the more completely one is able to ignore them, forgot them, as it wero, the less their annoyance will seem. ~While a per- sistent dwelling on _them. thinking about them, talking about them, is al- most certain to swell and prolong the suffering they cause. If one is the vic- tim of some small mishap, the sooner and the more completely he can turn his mind to something else and for- got it the better for him. The soon- er will the evil evaporate and pass awsy.
