Brown & Perkins, ifiemeys-at-law New York, Jan. 15.—A new phase of tiie threatened strike of the Baseball Players -Fraternity developed here late today when jt was learned that Samuel Gompers, _president of the American Federation of Labor, President David L. Fultz of the play- ers’s organization, had been in con- ference relative to the proposed action of the members in refusing to sign 1917 baseball. contracts until the minor league —magnate should grant requests made by the players. Just as he was leaving for Wash- ington, Gompers admitted he bad been in conference with several times within the past few weeks and that the latest conversation occurred today. When asked if the fraternity was & member of the labor federation, he_replied: “Not yet, but soon I expect.” “I have been in close touch” he continued, “with the officers of the Baseball Players Fraternity for some little time now, and while the players’ organization is not afiliated with us as yet I am in full sympathy with their requests snd action and they have my moral support. I am deeply interested in the welfare of the bail players and they will have my sup- port in any action that they may see fit to take in order to better existing conditions. This is all that I care to two major leagues will formulate their own plans independent of the minor leagues, but both will work in absolute harmony for the protection of their interests. No offensive action will be taken, but the battle lines will be drawn elosely and every precaution taken to settle the differences with the players tor all time. beginning of season. It is expected, how- ‘some sort of an agreement been reached before the date ardives. The players must show their hands first by re- fusing to report at the training camps. The clubs are compelled to tender a this powers the clubs to withdraw contracts and gives them the privi- lege of offering new terms vlayers. Signed Players Must Report. The fact that each club in the two big leagues has several players under contract already will surely compicate matters wihen it comes to a strike by the members of the fraternity. Some of not all, the men signed up at present are members of the order, and if they fail to report they violate their contracts. As some of them are playing under war-time contracts made during the Federal League in- vasion, it will be interesting to learn how many of them will violate them Burdick .... .... 8 Benton Stone Oat .
