George Comeau of Occum, who has spells of being mentally unbalanced, showed up in town last Thursday and during his wanderings came to a feld in Dorrville where William MacNicol had a number of people at work husking corn. Comeau saying nothing to any one started in to husk with the others. A little later he become gross- ly indecent and insulting to several women. Deputy Sheriff L. M. Gingras was notified, and hurrying to the field, he placed the man under arrest and lodged him in a cell at the police sta- tion. - First Selectman J. H. Shea was notified and upon investigation of the man's condition it was at first thought best to send hi mto Brewster's Neck. Legal advice was taken and Norwich officials were interviewed, he being a resident of that town. His mother was visited and acquainted with_the facts in the case. She told the officers that he had such spells occasionally, and wanted him sent home, where she could care for him. Accordingly he was released and Officer Gingras took hi mhome Saturday evening. Threatening Fire in Sylvandale. Sylvandale residents had a bad. fire scare just before noon Sunday and much ‘valuable property there - was saved from destruction only by hard and persistent fighting. A passing freight set the fire and the tall dry grass below the railroad bridge and fanned by a strong southerly wind, the blaze swept up the flats and. into the brooks below Sylvandale. Everything was dry and the flames came on, it is described, as fast as a man could trot. The few men there who tried to stop the headway were powerless, and as it threatened the building, E. F. Burelson telephoned to the vorough for aid. Warden —. H. McCarthy of the A. A. Young fire com- pany was notified and an automobile load of firemen with several -small hose (there are no hydrants in Syly- andale) buckets and chemical exting- uishers were hurried to the place. Meanwhile automobiles were halted on the state road and the men got busy and lent a willing hand. Others who saw the fire from the borough came to help. The use of shovel and wet cloth bags, water in_ pails and the extinguishers, stopped the fire just in time to save the buildings. A large acreage of grass and brush was burn- ed over. Mr. Burelson telephoned the Bulletin correspondent that he greatly appreciated the aid of the Jewett City firemen, who so willingly and prompt- ly came inta another town. Party on Third Birthday.
