NORWICH BULLETIN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1916 Watch Hill May Have $300,000 Hotel Reported Colonel A. E. Dick With Others Will Buy Up Burn- ed Section and Erect Modern Hotel—Westerly Citizens Start Fund for Benefit of Injured Mystic Firemen. ‘The Watch Hill house, destroyed by fire last Thursday night, with two other hotels and two cottages, was the largest hotel at Watch Hill, and was filled to capacity last season, as were all the other hotels at that popular summer resort. There is absolute need for even increased hotel accommoda- tions if Watch Hill is to be continued as a puldic resort, as there has been annual and healthy growth in the number of visitors, the great majority of them being people who nave made ‘Watch Hill the place of their summer residence for several years. Colonel A. E. Dick, who hus leased | and managed the Watch Hill house for several seasons, has broadly hinted that he is authorized to purchase rot only the grounds formerly occupied by the Watch Hill house, but also that of the Hastings and Bush cottages and the Colonial hotel and, perhaps, the Columbia house, although the latter is not essential in connection with the proposed plan. It is said that the colonel and the owners of the proper- ties are not wide apart in the size of the purchase price. Colonel Dick does not assume that he is acting for himself, as he has not the capital to swing such a big propo- sition. There was roport that the colonel was being hacked by a syndi- cate, but there was another report to the effect that the colonel was repre- senting Morton F. Plant in the pre- liminaries for the proposed purchase. Considerable credence is in the report that Mr. Plant is interested in having a really first class hotel at Watch Hill, as a business proposition, and he is no novice in that line of busi- ness, as he already owns some of the best hotels in the United States. According to report, provided the burned district can be purchased, a new hotel, modern in every detail, will be erected at a cost of $200,000, the work to be commenced as soon after the real estate is transferred «s Is pos- sible, with the vie wto having the hotel in read for occupancy by 1 next. true, future of Wa summer resort would he tion. as; To a complaint for being intoxicated a young man was arraigned in the Third district court Wednesday and entered a plea of He said he had never been A be for intoxication, o ny othe rfen: nd never would be again. He pleaded for leniency and stated that he believed the turning point had been reached. He asked for anotner chance to reform and that he be not sent to jail at this time. Judge Willlams decided to give him that chance, although he plainly stated that he doubted the sincerity of the accused. Judgment was sus- pended and the costs were paid. A fund has heen started in Westerly in aid of the two Mystic firemen who were severely burned at the Wateh Hill fire and ave still under treatment in the Joseph Lawrence hospital, New London. This fund is for the purpose of meeting all hospital expenses and to prevent the young men from being at financial loss by reason of their in- juries. This fund is not growing rap- idly, and it is hardly believed will serve the purpose iiftended. Here's the comment of a taxpayer in the Watch Hill fire district: “I don't consider it just the thing for the people of the village of West- erly-to do, even voluntarily, somethir that the Wateh Hill fire, district oug! to do, as a matter of duty, right and justice. WILSON AND HUGHES “EXCELLENT GENTLEMEN.” Statement by Prohibition Presidential Nominee Landrith. Scranton, Pa., Oct. 25.—A new note for a national candidate in the present election campaign was sounded to- pight by Ira Landrith, the prohibition vice presidential aspirant, when he declared that Wilson and Hughes were both “excellent gentlemen,” and that he did not care who won the presiden- tial race. Landrith attacked their parties, however, declaring that they were responsible for the silent attitude o‘f their candidates on the liquor ques- tion. “Both of these candidates are ex- cellent gentlemen, and the country won’t be in grave danger with either of them in the White House,” he said at Wilkesbarre. “Both are preachers’ sons, they act alike and think alike, and so I know they are all right. I dc:n‘t care whether Wilson or Hughes wins, “But their parties are not all right. They are silent on their liquor question and they make thelr candidates silent. If you can vote the straight republican or democratic ticket all of the time and remain decent, then you're & moral acrobat, and you should perform for the entertainment of the children. “I used to be a democrat, but T found I couldn’t be a straight democrat and a straight man, so I left that party.” A wave of applause swept over the crowd, but Landrith quickly silenced it with another remark that broke new cheering from other persons, obvicusly democrats. “Oh, you republicans cheer,” he sald. we're indecent.” —_— A thin paste of wood ashes and lemon juice will renew tarnished brass. need not “You're as rotten as VICE PRESIDENT MARSHALL IN RHODE ISLAND Made Addresses in Providence, Providence and Pawtucket. COPELAND MURDER TRIAL AT GALVESTON, TEXAS Fourth Degree Oath of K. of C. Fig- ures in the Defense. Galveston, Texas, Oct. 26— The state rested this afternoon in the case of John Copeland, bank cashier of Marshall, Texas, on trial in connec- tion with the killing of Willlam Black, an anti-Catholic lecturer, year and nine months ago at Marshall. Only five witnesses had been ex- amined, Sadie Black, the adopted daughter of the lecturer, it was an- nounced tonight, will arrive tomorrow night. The state’s’ attorney said she would be a witness for them in rebut- tal. The defense began its case with an attempt to introduce as evidence what was declared to be an authentic copy of the fourth degree oath of the Knights of Columbus, to refute the authority of the circular introduced circulated by Clarence F. Hall, Black's business agent. Sam J. Willlams of Galveston was sworn in as a witness but after he had stated that he was a fourth degree member of the organ- ization and familiar with the oath tak- en, the state objected, gainniz a temp- orary victory. The defense then announced two witnesses who had attended the lec- ture given by William Black in Mar- shall on the night preceding the shooting. Henry Holcomb a shop work- man of Marshall, said Black declared the convents more or less prisons and ought to have government inspection. The lecturer, he added, also made sensational statements about the rela- tions of nuns and priests and declared he would rather see his wife or mother dead than in a convent. “Did he make a wholesale denunci- ation of the nuns?’ asked Attorney P. O. Beard on the cross examination. “Yes, nearly all” replied the wit- ness. He added that the lecture was widely talked about in the shop next day. Walter Scott, now of Fort Worth, but at the ime of he killing of Marshall, gave estimony similar to Holcomb. He said that Black declared during the address that he had been shot several times and expected that he would dfe “in the cause.” REPORTS OF THE FALL OF CHIHUAHUA CITY Are Current in San Antonio, But Are Not Confirmed.
