ANNOUNCEMENTS DAVIS THEATRE TONIGHT The Biue Envelop Society meets To thoroughly arouse an audience to uproarious and _health giving laughter requires the efforts of a mas- ter builder of farce, and it is in this rdspect that Richard Lambert, the producer of The Blue Envelope, which will be the attraction at the Davis theatre tonight. The story of The Blue Envelope has to do_with John Doe, a man of high standing in his native Cahoes. Doe's sympathies have been touched by an article in a matrimonial journal signed The Clinging Vine. He replies that he is “A Sturdy Oak,” and after numerous letters have passed between the two, they arrange a clandestine dinner_at an_up-town restaurant in New York. Bidding hi§ wife a fond |farewell Doe leaves Cahoes ostensibly {for Bermuda. He arrives jn New | York ang makes a flying start in a {taxicab for the trysting place. There is an exciting ride up Broadway, a sudden accident, and before Doe re- covers from his dazed state he finds \that he and a bewitching feminine |stranger, who in some manner my: iterious to him has become his com- |panton, are being subjected to treat- {ment by a beauty doctor, to whose es- {tablishment they have been taken by {a_mistaken zealot in the quest for the foffice of a regular physician. Before {the philandering husband can extricate {himself from this situation Mrs. Doe arrives on the scene. Complications are forced one upon another in quick succession. !_The only company presenting The Blue Envelope on tour is this partic- ular one, regardless of the usual c tom managers to place number “2” and companies on tour in a me- tropolitan success. . Another interest- ing and alluring feature in connection with this engagement is the fact that the $1.50 scale of prices will prevail. AT THE DAVIS THEATRE Vaudeville and Moving Pictures An unusually fine vaudeville and movie programme is being shown at the Davis theatre for the first half of the weekw. The Five Ching Lo Maids are the feature attraction. They are seen in a minlature revue with spe- clal scenery and attractive electrical effects. The eecond headliner is the act presented by Granville and Mack, ns of ability. Their e Italian Organ Grinder. or the third attraction the management has secured The Friet- ches, who appear in a nove] athletic offering entitled The Tramp and the Girl. Home 1s the name of the big five- recl Triangle moving plcture and to A;Omrl"‘ll' the show there is the usual wo-ree] comedy film, called The French Milliner, featuring Fay Tin- cher ang a cast of favorit BREED THEATRE. Bpecial Feature, “The Spoilers,” in Nine Reels, Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday and Thursday the Breed will present William Farnum and Kathlyn Willlams in The Spoilers, taken from the famous book by Max Beach. This virile masterplece s a Selig production and is produced in nine startling acts. It is a thrilling red-blood story of strong men battling for supremacy with all their power of mind and muscle—alert for every cast of chance. It is big, moving, master- ful and wholesome ix its human inter- ests, thrilling In incident, absorbing in situation and powerful in progression from start to finish. It presents the most stubborn, strenuous and exciting fight ever pictured—the acme of real- ism, a_whole town is dynamited and an_extraordinary volcanic earthquake, The Spoilers had a_two weeks’ run on Broadway, New York city, eight weeks at the Studebaker, Chicago; two wecks at Keiths, Boston, and = two weeks at the National, In Bosfon, at advanced prices. The Breed will pre- sent this special feature, with an aug- mented orchestra at the usual house prices, making no advance at all. On account of the length of the perform- ance It will be necessary to start the matinee at 2.15 and the evening shows will commence at 6. BREED THEATRE. The feature screen production at the Breed theatre for today is Dorian's Divorce, a five part Metro wonderplay, featuring the gifted Lionel Barry more and the exquisite Grace Valen- tine. Never before has Mr. Barry more had a role more admirably suited to the distinctive talents, which have won him his eminent place in the world of dramatic art, than that of Dorfan Keene, the idealistic, but de- voted husband, the character he por- trays in the present production, Grace Valentine, who shares stellar honors with Mr. Barrymore in the part of the whimsical wife, also handles a difficult role with rare artistry and in a fashion that captures the audiences’ sympathy. The story is a powerful one teeming with mystery, romance and thrills. Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Drew are also seen In a very funny one reel comedy entitled, At a Premium. A BELGIAN GOVERNMENT SHIFPING ORGANIZATION Is Being Perfected by Belgian Au- thorities at Havre, France. Havre, France, Oct. 2.—The Belgian authorities here going ahead with the formation of an extensive govern- ment shipping orzanization, known as the Royal Pelgian Lioyd, which they expect to take rank with the principal ocean-carrying organizations now in existence. Of th .000,000 capital, all of which has been paid in, the Belgian government has subsoribed $16,000,000 and has guaranteed the paymei of the bonds on the concern. Already thirty-nine steamers have been acquire nd an_ambitious pro- gram of baying and building i out for the next five years, notw standing that Bel um is supposed to be at present prostrate under Ger- man domination. The | zinn organization s some- thing like the new American shipping easur ch is a measure for de- veloping the merchant marine of the country, and cach has the principle of private operation of the ships, with government surveilance over the ad- [ tion Pictures at Breed Theatre. Tf the measure had zone before the Belgian parliament there would probably have been a long de- bate, as there was in the American congress. But with the Belgian par- liament wscattered, the Belgian execu- {tive authorities here took the more expeditious means of issuing a decree which fully constitutes the s concern and establishes all the detalls of organization. The need of ships to bring Ame can relief supplies was the immediate cause for the formation of the Bel- gian company, althouzh once formed for this purpose it has now taken on much larger dimensions as one of Bel- gium's weapons in the economic and trade strugsles growing out of the war, With the great Belsian shipping port of Antwerp occupied by the Ger mans, the headquarters of the ne company had to be at the little por of La Parme on the short stretch o sea-front still held by the Belgian ar: my, lying west of the Y organizers also have been Belg! fugees in London and Paris, W formerly been the chief bankers and shipping merchants of Antwerp. Freight rates arc to be reduced one-half on samples of i Belgian commerce and industry sent abroad in soliciting trade The decree also provides that Bel- gian sailors shall be employed as far as available; Belgian passengers shall have the fullest facilities, and Bel- glan ports favored as far as possible in trafiic arrangements. The foreign agencies are to be run by Belgians. and two government commissioners are to watch over this Belzian chs acter of the orzanization. Witho the consent of these government offi cers, the soclety is specifically for- bidden from taking a subsidy from a foreign government. At a meeting held later at La Par- me, the organizers above nomed werc chosen dirsctors and auditors of ti company. The ships acquired at the outset included a number of “tramps,’ particularly useful just now when re= ular trade routes are interrupted.
