The pitching of*Enot was the fea- ture of the afternoon. He fanned 18 men and was at his best in the pinches and deserved a shutout. Especiaily in the eighth he showed his-ability, when with the bases filled and no one out he fanned two.end made an easy out to an infield, leaving the three men marooned. Jewett City came down strong and had a big crowd of followers who rooted hard but to no avail. Brickley pitched a sood, clean game, fanning six and allowed no bases on balls. Houlihan played a fine game In cen- ter, making several running catches, robbing the Hospital boys of extra base hits. Oakes robbed Finney of a nice hit when he ran over second and made a bare-hand stop of his smash and then recovered in time to throw Finney out at first. For the Hospital the hitting of Aus- tin_and Vincent was hard and timely. Next Saturday the Hospital will play the Athletics of South Manches- ter, who have already beaten the Mid- dletown Asylum team, and reputed to be one of the fastest semi-professional teams in the state. COMING LIGHTWEIGHT. Joe Welling is Liable to Be a Prom- inent Factor in the Ring. There Is another lightweight who 15 fast coming to the front and is likely to become a prominent factor in the situation_before long. The newcom- er s Joe Wellinig of Chicago, who made how to hit. He snaps his blows, moving his fists but a fe winches. Twice he sent the rugged Pierce down for long courts with short, snappy Jolts that shot over like a flash. Well- ing should have won the bout in the second round, but lack of experience prevented him from putting on the finishing touches. With great helght, long reach and hitting abflity far above the average, Welling is a dangerous man for any of the contenders and there is likely to be some Tvely sidestepping among those who have established reputa- tions. Shawnon Twins Jump. The Shannon twins, Joseph and Maurice, packed their grips and jump- ed as members of the New Hav. team Thursday, but later sent a t gram in the form of an alibi saying they were called home by the illness of thelr mother. Owner Collins was greatly surprised for he did not know they were out of the city until he re- seiced a wire from Jersey City. They said they would return to take part in_Thursday’s game. Why they should take all their per- sonal belongings if they intended to return in a day is a puzzle to the New Haven management and they firmly belleve the twins _intended jumping from the club. they do return they are liable to fines and suspensions for taking absence wit out leave. i “Red” Whalen May Play With Mur- [ “Red” Whalen will be given a ouwt by Manager Murphy of the Mur- : D lins.
