Cousin George and Cousin Nick seem. determined that Cousin Bill shall not, and the Victorfan royalists still X a hard nut to crack. But it is just as necessary to be prepared to make peace as it is to be prepared . for defence against warring enemies. The war has reached a point from which peace seems to be in sight: and to make peace perma- nent these pacts of vengeance will have to be revised and perhaps elimi-, nated. Upon. the character of the peace de- pends future prospects. It'will be no ‘easy: matters to summon. the.righteous spirit which'will heal the, wounds of the nations and.leave no‘deep resent- ments—no+ blood ‘feuds- for-future set-. tiement. The trade agreement made between the entente.nations looks as if they intend to continue policies of retalla- tion for years after the strife is end- ed, which is not indicative of a peace fhat will last. The' cry of tho entente allies has, Been that the war will never endkun(fl 1t cantend:right; and lot us'hope!that right will prevail though the heavens fall. A, contemporary says: “The &river ©f an automobile /ought to exerch constant care not to . injure Dedes- trians or others.” Wogshould say he Ehould ‘have.a care not-to injure his machine or himseif, /and feel the same responsibility for the well-being of those entrusted to his.care he would bave, were they priceless glass vases. ‘We callito. mind an.auto-driver who lost his job because .he:did not-take s, rignt_caro -~ of_ hjs_employer. - He | ran his car into a boulder and jarred his emplover to the limit. “Youll have_to get through,” he sald to him, “for Mrs. expectsyou to take the same care of me as you would of a basket of eggs; and what would have hap- Dened to a basket of eggs thent” That is the idea? An auto driver should value himself and his car highly, and his passengers above ail price, and worthy of constant care and caution. Then his mind would be right, his action right and the dan- ger line avoided. The joy of speed is always menaced by a prospect of disaster. Safety first is a guaranty of few accidents, A COMMON SLANDER. The commissioner of health of New York declares “the filthiest thing in the world is the housefly.” He seems to have entirely overlooked the carrion fly and all the scavenger beetles. We do not enjoy going into a res- taurant and having one or two flies scalded to death in our hot coffee, or drowned in our glass of milk; but even they are preferable in death this way to cockroaches and other stealthy invaders of some pantries. Anvone who has watched a house- fAf is aware it excels the cat in the habit of laving itself. The.common housefly wipes off its chin 15 or 20 times, brushes off its wings and brushes its whiskers whenever it alights and has a leisure moment. It isn‘t as nimble as a flae, or ex- pectorating molasses like a grasshop- per. Most of the time it delish to worry the baldheaded gentleman and to tickle the infant in the cradle and to dodge the woman with a fly- spatter many times a day. The house fly does not look for car- rion, but for sugar and meat gravies, and sweet pie He is something of an cpicure if orts of mean things are said about him. ELIMINATE FEAR. If we were afraid of filth we should not he worried by epidemics. The one thing all American cities are suilty of is negligence in respect to the wastage of families and its being tossed upon the ground to ferment and putrify and to breed fevers and other contazious or infectious diseases. In army life the camp is thorough- ted every morning, and every day, for the e of cleanliness and the inape ering swamps and pest spots from which they gather germs? What every city needs is thorougl periodical cleaning. EDITORIAL NOTES. My wife and I hadn't partaken of a meal any- where but in our own quiet dining room until our cook left recently. We tried to get another cook, but there wasn't one to be had. “The next morning we picked an un- ostentatious place to breakfast and had passed through the bacon and egg stage and reaching for the grape fruit when an unearthly racket started behind us. Although my wife is a brave woman, I must admit that the pandemonium let loose caused her to start suddenly and look for the nearest exit. “I hastily arose, because T felt surg- ing within my bosom the Instinct of the male to protect his mate. The rest of the hubbub was made by whirling dervishes who did native acrobatics while the- musiclans played. The waiter said that it was the very latest in breakfast cab- arets. “Where we had luncheon we ate our shortcake and whipped cream while nineteen native Hawaiians played uke- leles and sang the folk songs of the Sandwich islanders in a minor key. “The establishment where we dined that evening was the ciimax of cara- rabla or cabarephobia, as my wife called it.
