Hodge at Davis Theatre, Tuesday Eveninz, May 23. needed to exploit this highly populaf star, so great has been his popularity in The Man From Home and The Road to Happiness. But now he has made his bow in a fresh portrayal the same sturdy American type ich always appeals to his admirers, and this time it is the supreme type of American gentleman—the modern American who-is equally at home in buginess and society and ever master- ful and alert. John Otis is a captain of industry, a club man, a man-about- town, who 'plays golf, polo, and has a £mattering of sporting knowledge as on understanding of most worldly matters. This new role of Hodge's is that of a man of the city and a background of high society life casts it into sharp relief. All of the Tour acts of this latest comedy drama are Iafd in New Yorkicity and its fash- fonable and luxurious life is vividly depicted. Fashion is the keynote of the play itself, although Otis is rep- resentative of the staunch, common sense American fdeals. He hails from Kansas City, and like the “Man from " that he is, he has “to be .”. The resulteis that when his sister of the title role, a rich and aris- tocratic young widow, Mrs, Ellsworth, becomes involved in her extravagant social follies and her headstrong wor- ship of soclety fads and foreign titles, and is about to become the prey of two scheming adventurers, Otis comes post-haste to New York. ' Arrived, he dons evening clothes, and embarks in the mad whirl of society,” while per- forming the rather delicate and ‘at times somewhat ,unsuccessful task of curing his sister of her infatuation. But he finally achieves success by a most odd and novel strategem. It is this which furnishes a remarkable comedy surprise as the third act cli- max—a surprise that has proven one of ‘the most convulsively mirthful fi- nales of the modern stage. Mr. Hodze has surrounded himself with his ac- customed fine support of artists, They include, besides his charming and youthful leading lady, Miriam Collins —and that gracious old-time actress, 1da_Vernon, such other expert players as Hamilton Deane, Teresa Maxwell- Conover and Charles Canfield. Seat sale Saturday at 10 a. m. Note —No mail orders will be accepted for 50c seats as the number is limited and will be sold only at the box of ice. G COLONIAL THEATRE. The feature picture at the Colonial today is The Heart Breakers, a Knick- erbocker drama-in three parts. It portrays incidents which happen when Bernice becomes an heiress by her sudden inheritance of a fortune and throws four ambitious men of doubt- ful ages into consternation. Folly is an Essanay drama in two parts and two other pictures for today are He's In Again; Mina drama, and The Ra- koon Hose Company, Lubin comedy, which ends today’s big bill.
