What then is the spirit? It is the free spirit. Every per- son in the United States has the right to publicly express his ideas, or lack of ideas which is often the case. Of course one must be careful and not infringe upon the rights of others. If character is assaulted or injustice done by voice or pen redress can be sought in the courts. Individual rights are protected by law. But every man has a right to express his opinion, on the sayings, writings, doings of any other man. Thank God the public press in this country is not muzzled. If it was public officials would ride roughshod over the rights of the, people. If any public man in_this country goes far astray he will be lashed by the press, for there is nothing he fears more than the pen of the editor and the pencil of the comic artist. There is nothing that makes him writhe more than to be ridiculed in the cartoons. The real American spirit as seen in frea public opinion keeps him where poses that of other nations; or that our American spirit comes up to the standard of cold reason more nearly than that of other peoples. The American spirit, then, is the mysteri- ous common bond that unites us into a nation that is contributed to by cli- mate, geography, natural productions, manutactured articles, education, po- litical and moral development, and the goal to be reached by free political institutions. For one T have great sympathy for the so-called hyphenated Americans. They come to us from other countries, steeped in a spirit that is In many cases un-American and in all cases non-American. They naturally love the lands that gave them birth even though they find there conditions too hard for permanent residence. It is not strange that for awhile there should be confusion In their minds. The American ideal is not that of the other nations from which they came. Let all immigrants to this country grow into the American spirit, as I think the better class wants to, If each, usual prices $29.50 to $39.50. She can now own her property and her children—in education and in re- sponsibility. As opportunity has of- fered she has grasped it and has made good. But she is still in the difran- chised class, with men convicted of heinous crimes. This idea of her dis- ability is not flutering. She needs to know how to train the future citizens, but is held back by custom. ‘A member of the legislature said Mre. Hepburn, ought not to be there, ‘but thought it was all right for young- er and less experienced Eirls to b working among men, because they were used to that. Before the sesion was over he said ho had got used to her, t00, and would endorse her cause. She spoke of the chief opposition to woman suffrage as coming from the liquor interests. They hired men to epeak against it long before the anti- suffragists took it up. They are very glad of their assistance and the liquor papers in the west print the pictures of Mrs. George and writing of her col- leagues. She sald our government is run by voters. Women are proving competent citizens, too, and want this last step of voting as a proof of con. fidence. Mr. Underhill stated that all the western states having suffrage are Mormon_states and that the Mormon church holds the balance of power in all of them. He said the vote is mere- ly a form of government, not a righ or priviledge. Men elect other men to govern for them. It is protective and every voter may be called upon to help protect in time of trouble. The vote is of very little value and men, pay little attention to it. Many ne- glect it. Less than one-third voted in the recent primary in Massachusetts. Suffrage would only double the Indif- ferent vote and the indifferent vote is the danger. Votes do not make laws. Men can agree on one man to represent them, but women never could. Father can get along very well without mother's help in law-making. He sald suffrage had been repealed in Utah and was in | bad condition in two other states. Men vote by classes anyway and | women would do the same. She would either double her husband's vote or diefranchise him. Eighty per cent. of the women of Conmecticut are married s0 the others would be hopelessly out- numbered and their vote would have no effect. He said the other states where the drinking man always votes ‘He claimed the socialists b bi were the ones who made the most noise for suffrage. Mrs. Hepburn immediately gave facts ana figures which disproved many of his statements. She said all suffragists are not socialists any more then all antis are saloonkeepers. Six suffrage states are prohibition instead of the four he gave. OMies Julia Lathrop is a voter in dllinois. He said she kept her posi- tion because she was not one. If they held the balance of power, they would hold more offices than they now do. Men over 45 years do not have to fight but they do not have the suffrage taken away from them on reaching that age. If the vote has no value then the Revolutionary ‘war was an unnecessary thing and not worth the trouble. The questions also called forth some €ood arguments on various topics. One of Mr. Underbill's answers forth an emphatic denial from our former townsmen, now : Colorado, as to his statements cerning prohibition and rm there.
