HELL’S HINGES mMUSIC WRITTEN IN 'RECORD TIME Composer Schertzinger Turned Out Complets Orchestra Score in Five Days. What is declared to be a record for the composition of a complete score of original music for a five-reel motion picture drama was made recently at Inceville by Victor L. Schertzinger, the young musical genius discovered by Thomas H. Ince. The production is Hell's Hinges, the Triangle Kav-Bee feature now being shown at the Davis theatre, starring William S. Hart, whose characteriza- tions of western “bad” men have won him national prominence. Schertzin- ger wrote the original music in three days and, with the assistance of a corps of arrangers, delivered a com- piete score for a twenty-piece orches- tra two days later, making a total of five days’ time in which the work was done. Moreover, Schertzinger believes that it is his best work. “When I saw Hell's Hinges on the screen in the Inceville projecting room, the story and the manner in which it was produced inspired me,” Schertzin- ger declares. “The western atmos- phere, mingled with the dramatic qualities of the story, made it espec- fally adapted to the kind of music I like best to write. There was some- thing in the big clashes between the church and saloon element that of- fered a contrast, and there was an abundance of love interest which ev- ery composer finds easy to hahdle. “The great fire that destroys the western village offered a splendid chance to bring in some heavy music and this, with the light touches that were made possible in the wonderful scenic effects, made it a joy to write music which I belicve is the best T have written for any of the Thomas H. Ince productions. This speclal music is being plared by the Davis concert orchestra under the direction of Mr. C. A. Dowsett. Cad Express Train. The wonders and thrills of motion photography is well exemplified in a startling picturo being shown at the Davis theatre this week, where a pho- tographic record is shown of the re- cent dare-devil race which was staged in California by the Cadillac Motor Car Company. Arrangements were made with the railroad officials and the course set from Los Angeles to San Francisco, a distance of 493 miles. A throbbing motor car and glant locomotive stood side by side in Los Angeles, awaitinz the signal to start upon their record breaking race. At last the signal was given. Both locomotive and motor car gathered headway. Faster and faster sTew the pace until both were exerting the very limit of the wondrous powers of lo- comotion which the hand of man had placed within them. Over hill, moun- tain and dale they plunged until at last the city by the Golden Gate hove in view over the horizon, and San Francisco was reached. The time? Twelve hours and ten minutes. The fastest time in which human beings have ever traversed the distance men- tioned. Who won’ The Cadillac by one hour and thirty-five minutes, though it was necessary for the motor car to travel twelve miles more than the train. See this race upon the sereen at the Davis theatre Wednes- day afternoon and evening, April 12th. AT THE COLONIAL The big feature at the Colonial to- dap is Gladiola, an Edison drama. in four parts. The cast includes Viola Dana, Charles Sutton, Jessie Stevens, Robert Conness, Pat O'Malley, Eldean Stewart. Another good picture for to- day is The Danger of Being Lonesome, an Essanay drama, in two parts, fea- turing Bryant Washburn. Which is Which, a Lubin comedy, ends today’s big bill. Yew York, April 10.—Federal Judge Mayer today reserved decision on a motion for a separate trial for Paul Daeche, who is under indictment with Robert’ Fay and Walter Scholz and three others charged with conspiring to blow up ships carrying munitions to the entente allies, Daeche’s lawyers said in support of the motion that his client's interests were antagonistic to those of Fay and the latter's brother-in-law, Scholz, who had confessed originating the plot. The motion was opposed by Assist- ant United States Attorney John C. Knox, who submittcd an affidavit to the effect that Daeche had admitted being concerned in the conspiracy and should therefore be tried with the other two. Daeche, in a counter-affidavit, denied confessing and also the charge that he went to bridgeport, Conn., in October, 1915, to get the dynamite. He sald that in September, 1915, Fay asked him to get some dynamite, saying that e could make commissions on to do. A separate trial has previously been granted to th eother trio in the case, Who have not confessed.
