Chapman of Groton appeared in the superior court in New London on Tuesday asking for sup- port from her husband, Christopher B. Chapman, now of New York. Mrs. Chapman alleges that her husband de- serted her 19 years ago and that he has not contributed to her support except when compelled to by the courts. Trial of the case was started before Judge Shumway. Mr. and Mrs. Chapman were mar- rid, Jan. 3, 1893. On May 30, 1896, Chapman left his wife, taking their 15_months’ old son. He has not lived with her since and has refused to sup- port her, according to the complaint. The defense is that Chapman - se- cured a divorce from his wife in the cireuit court of Kentucky in Lexing- ton in 1300 and that he was freed from his marital obligations %o this wife. The plaintiff alieges that the divorce was secured by her husband without her knowledge, that he went to Ken- tucky. purposely to_ obtain the divorce and that it was sécured fraudulently. Mrs. Chapman testified Tuesday morning that she married her husband while they were both employed at the Watson estate in Eastern Point, she as a servant and he as gardener. In the winter of 1895 she went to New Yorj with the Watson family and was married_to Chapman. They lived to- gether for about two, years when he became ugly, abusive and quarrelsome,s finally leaving her on May 30. She went to New York and on her return a few days later her husband met her on the Norwich line boat and on_her arrival in Groton her husband was met by his father, who :00k him and their infant son away. Some time previous to that tifhe her husband had caused her to be examined by sev- | eral physicians and upon inquiry she | learned that the examination was as | to her sanity. She had been informed, however, that she not insane. | Mrs, Chapman testified that at the time her.husband secured. his divorce in Lexington she was working at Brush's restaurant in Bank streaf. In his divorce proceedings, her husband has set forth that she had accom- panied him to Lexington in 1595 and that while t she had deserted him and gone to Cincinnati when as a mat- ter of fact she was in New London all the time.
