Smith Haines, a wealthy Trumbull farmer, today shot and killed his wife at their home here, with a shotgun. He then made his escaps. The two were alone in the house. Three of their four : children were away at school and the other, Jason, 16 years old, had just left home to g0 -to school in Bridgeport. As nearly as can be learned Haines and his wife had a quarrel over se- curing a team to take her to court. Haines declared, it is said, that if ‘she went to testify asainst him she would have to walk. When she went to the telephone to call up a neighbor and arrange about a team, Halnes is said to have fired at her with a double-barreled shotgun, striking her on the arm.
