MELBERT FAMILY SAFE. Escaped Fury of Galveston Storm by Fleeing to Houston. A telegram received here Thurs- day relieved the anxiety that has been felt for Mr. and Mrs, P. C. Melbert of Galveston, the city, swept by a terrific tropical storm this week. Mrs. Mel- bert was formerly Miss Lauretta Al- lard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jo- seph Allard, of this city and Pomfret. Mr. Melbert paid heed to the United States weather bureau storm warnings and made an early start away from Galveston to avoid an experiencd such as he felt certain would pe visited upon the city, taking his family to Houston, where they arrived in safety and from where his telegram to his relatives here was filed. Oscar Johnson Findd for Running Pony Express—Liquors Destroyed. A North Grosvenordale man’s am- bition to run a pony express service between this city and that village has ended in disaster. Arriving there from Putnam with a consignment of intox- icants that included geleven cases of beer and ale, a keg of beer and a small quantity of whiskey and some soda, the load was seized by officers of the law. Oscar Johnson is the man who had been conducting the _express. Taken before a justice of the peace he was fined $25 and costs, amounting to a total of $38.12, which he paid, It is understood that Mr. Johnson . The firemen's inspection to be held here within a few days is proving of much interest to the members of the department and plans to have all ap- paratus looking its best, uniforms re- splendent and everything appearing to the credit of the organization. The members of the department will pass in review before the city officials. This inspection will be the first one at which the department will be able to show a piece of motor fire fighting apparatus. In connection with the event the members of the department are arranging for a baseball game, probably to be played with represen- tatives of the Danielson department, and a dance in the evening. The Putnam Country club continues to grow in popularity with its mem- bers. Golf seems to be the leading attraction at the presemt time and it has already won many devotees. A long expected happening took place Thursday, when Officer Allen confiscated the load of Felix Bedard of Norwich while he was on his way to deliver liquor in the town of Plain- field.
