Thi almost goes without saying when Miss Gibson is still the active head of the Home, and the school is still under the supervision of Mr. Willard, agent for the State Board of Education. It may be inter- esting however, to hear that a summer school was maintained for five weeks during = the morning hours. This helped the children to brush up a bit on their regular work and also gave them a little interesting work not in the ordinary line, besides keeping them off their feet and out of the sun part of the long days. Spetial Event. ‘When this §chool ended a friend secured the use of ten autos to carry the household, to Mohegan Park where a happy afterncon was spent, and all but the smaller children walked home to find ice cream and cake served with their supper. In August Mr, George W. Carroll of- fered to give the children a trolley- ride to Ocean Beach.' Of course this fine offer was accepted and the start was made from Eighth street at ten o'clock on the morning of the only fine day of that week. Between the time of eating the fine chowder at the restaurant and the ice cream and cake sérved on Mabrey's lawn, both providea by the commis- sioners, the children had more than two hours to play on the beach. No one knew that a trolley-ride could be so enjoyable. The fine car used, and the careful and kindly attention of the men in charge of it, added much to the comfort and pleasurs of the oc- casion. Christmas was a most happy satisfactory time, with all the good things for the table, and the gifts pro- vided so generously by Mr. Carroll, who is constant in his remembrance of this in-the Hotel Elton, given under the | Home. auspices of Bishop O'Reilly assembly of that city. A great deal of work and expense wasg necssary to make this house ready for occupancy. City water and electric lights were installed. a steam heater wag placed in the cellar—although it was necessary to excavate in order to get head-reom —a bath room was secured by -putting a dormer window on the east side; the house was painted and other im- provements fterally too numerous to mention; were made. Fortunately the city had just put in a main sewer so that direct connection was made with the drain pipes from the cottage and the Home. At this time the well curbs at both houses were removed on account of the danger attending: them and pumps ‘were installed in their stead. The expense of all this was heavy but besides the cottage, long and sadly needed. the county secured a fine addi- tion of land to its property. The Home has reaped some benefit from the ad- dition to its sarden, which with the ex jon of the work of a man one Miss Gibson and the children e entirely car-d for, and which has yielded much produce for the Home table. The cottage ghas been open since January and tHirty-one children have ®een. cared for there for a period of two or three weeks each. Scarlet Fever, But Mild Type. It was a great disappointment, af- ter all the precautions to find Septem- ‘ber 17th that scarlet fever had broken out in the Home, precumably brought there by relatives visiting the children. Since that time other cases have {e- veloned until there are now twenty children in the Backus hospital, with this dread disease.
